mark poulson
I was reminded again this morning of something I've been doing for years, that helps me when I want to make a copy of a bait I've already posted. I typically make a bait, and play with it until I get it right, and then move on. Posting the building details when I post the pic. in the gallery helps me remember the details while they are still fresh, and gives me a handy reference, complete with pics of the freshly painted lures, when I want to make more. Its there forever (long live TU) in living color. It's very helpful for someone like me, who can't remember his own kids names half the time, let alone all the little building details that help make a bait successful.
BobP
I can't remember details on baits I made a week ago, much less 2 years ago! But I don't have to because I keep a notebook to record all the data on every batch of baits I make. How else can you replicate a bait that you like, or change specs on a bait that did not perform as you wanted? The worst thing I can imagine is building a bait, finding out that it catches bass like crazy, and then being unable to replicate the bait because you can't remember how it was built.
mark poulson
Bob, I've learned that's what dremel tools are for, to cut apart baits for which I've forgotten the building details. Ouch!!!

BobP
I have some baits that are real killers. The reside in the deep recesses of my tackle box, to be used only rarely. I can't imagine cutting one up to see why it works so well because I failed to make detailed notes on it when it was being built. It would be like chopping up your Lamborghini because you wanted to try to make something similar. Ain't gonna happen.
Doc-Drew
I am similar to BobP in that I record what I have done right after doing it. Granted, I am only painting, not carving, weighting, etc. My father and I share a file on Google Docs listing steps with a color picture. Works great. It allows us both to be able to paint each other's designs.
JRammit
Took a while for this to sink in... Took it the other way though... Soft bait gallery, great place to store color recipes! When i first started, i kept notes on my phone... Before i got a new phone, i emailed the notes to myself.... Good idea right??... No, new phone deleted the email.... Had to start all over... Wont get deleted again!!!
diemai
@ mark poulson A clever way to take best advantage out of the gallery, Mark , ........as for myself , I'm also very forgetful these days and have quit on making sketches and keeping records on my baits for a long period of time(one might call this attitude "unprofessional") . What I'm doing now , one might call a "buckshot solution" ,......carve at least half a dozen of new baits and one amongst will be the killer , LOL ! Greetz , Dieter Dieter, I admit it, I never got in the habit of taking notes, so putting details down when I'm posting a photo here is my notebook. A while back, I made several versions of the same crankbait, but with different ballast positions, when I was trying to make a hunting crankbait by using movable ballast. Thank goodness I took pictures and posted them, or I could never remember what I did that worked.
Vodkaman
Everything I do is designed on CAD, even if it is only a quick 2D line drawing used for a template. If the project is any good, I will update into 3D and model in the ballast, eyes and hooks. This is how I get my preliminary ballast locations and weights. I then use complex spreadsheets using the Archimedes method for fine tuning, and these files are all saved. I don't actually need to write anything down, all computerized. mark poulson
I don't think I can do that for my bait making. I'm not computer literate, and my rotten kids, who are, have left home! I just barely started keeping a kind of fishing log, on the week-at-a-glance planner I use as my calendar. I used one for forty years for my business, so it's easier for me to just add details about my day's fishing on it, and it's there for reference in the future. If I remember to do it.
