Ccfish
want to get some feathers for dressing treble hooks just not sure on the best ones to buy or the best place to buy from. Mostly gonna be used on popper style baits. Looked on a couple sites but theres so much to choose from and hard to tell the size of the feathers. Thanks
mohawkman
Since I do very little tying, I get my feathers from Cabela's or Bass Pro.
BobP
Well, I go to my local hobby superstore and buy a bag of chicken feathers for a few bucks. You have to sort through them to find the right ones to use and you often need to trim them but you still get a lot of feathered trebles out of a bag. I color them with a Sharpie when I want an accent color. They seem to hold up just as well as any other feathers I've tried.
Fatman
A picture would help, but go to Crazy Angler Tackle and get bags of dyed mallard flank feathers http://stores.crazyanglertackle.com/mallard-flank/ Even if you only want 5 colors you'll get a good selection of sizes's in each color. jonister
If you are a bird hunter, you can keep the feathers off birds and die them yourself or, just looking around for dropped feathers is also a good scource. you can get good ones from those white park geese. Ichthus
I like using long 2-3in heckle feathers that you can get from bass pro, cabelas, or any other place that sells fly tying equipment. I find the longer the feather, the more bites you get and that number goes up if you pause the bait longer.

I have several duck feathers, and will hopefully gain more this winter.... I've seen the thread on dying, and several YouTube videos on tying....... But havnt found much on preparing?? Obviously ill have to trim them in some way... Is there a good video showing how to do this??
Nathan
If you google " Schlappen Feathers" for fly tying you'll find what you need..Nathan
Salty's
schlappen would be too big. Strung chicken feathers/hackle is what you want. You can buy small qty at any orvis store, you want minimum 6-7" as they will be the most supple. You don't use the quill on the bottom. Bend the feathers and you'll see why. If you need larger qty call Chichester or Swalef or Zucker. You can buy them by the pound but a pound nowadays is close to legalized rape. All the costume outfits for women to thank for this. They've driven the cost of feathers thru the roof.
mark poulson
I tried some guinea fowl feathers, because I like the dappled pattern on them, but they don't flare at all when they're wet. Is there something I can do to them to get them to flare?

mark poulson
Yeah, I always tie them on with the "palm" facing out. Maybe I need to try trimming some of the tip off, so the fibers at the outside end are stiffer.
