Kscatman76
I'm trying to duplicate the jig in white in the middle. I bought Eagle Claw 570 in size 2 and 4 which you see at the top and bottom. I'm now confident it's either a VMC or a Mustad. Can any of you help me identify it? thanks in advance. dlaery
Well in my opinion there is not that much diff between the 3 hooks, Eagle Claw 570, Mustad 32755BR and VMC 9147BZ. My guess it is a #4. Maybe it is a #3? Just kidding on the 3. When i get back to the shop I'll post some pics of those brands of those sizes. It will be tomorrow unless someone else figures it out for you before.

dlaery
ok I did this before I left. From left to right, EC, VMC, Mustad. all number 4's I was shocked. I thought they were closer Edited September 16, 2015 by dlaery
Kscatman76
thanks for doing that for me. so it's either the mustad or the vmc like I suspected, just wish I knew which one before I ordered a bunch. in my picture the eagle claw 570 at the top is a size 2 and the bottom is a size 4. dlaery
where I buy my hooks the Mustads are 30 to 40% higher than EC and last I heard the VMC will be higher than the Mustad, but that could have changed.
smalljaw
Is there a reason it has to be exact? The top hook looks to be close to the same size as the middle but the middle hook appears to be bronze. Anyway, if you go to Captain hooks you can get the Eagle Claw L570BP, here is the important part, it has to have the "L" designation in front. The "L" stands for "laser sharp" which have a wicked needle point, but Captain hooks sells the regular 570, a 570BP which is a normal 570 with the black platinum finish and then they have the "L"570BP which is the laser sharp black platinum. If you take that hook, it matches up with a Mustad 32746 perfectly but the Eagle Claw is sharper, you'll know if you have the right model as you'll see a significant jump in price, about $6 more per 100 than the regular 570. JBarlow
I recommend taking the lead off the hook to get a better measurement and comparison of the size.
Kscatman76
it doesn't have to be exact, I'm making my own trout jigs, which they don't have the biggest mouths in the world but I think the big one is close enough that it shouldn't be an issue. It's more in my head than anything wanting to have something as close as I can to the jig head I've been using with great success for several years. I'm sure I'm over thinking it more than anything
TerryF2858
could be mustad 32756
dlaery
Use to 32756 was bronze and 32755 was gold, now there is no 32756, just 32755BR for bronze and 32755GL for gold
Fatman
Capt Hooks lists the 32755BR as the old style 32756. http://www.captainhookswarehouse.com/index.cfm?page=products&manid=2&catid=5&sizeid=0&view=1&offset=1 I fish a lot of trout here in Vermont with jigs and I use black chrome sickles along with all the old regular aberdeens I have poured up. The aberdeens I use are old stock Mustads and EC's which IMO better than the newer ones
Kscatman76
Man I poured up a bunch of ned heads and pony head jigs with the sickles and they are wicked sharp but goodness gracious mine break all the time. better than half of them have broke, usually on the shaft. I've lost all faith in them that's for sure.
smalljaw
There is a fix, the Eagle Claw 500BP Lil Nasty, it is Eagle Claws version of the sickle hook in the black platinum finish. I have used over 1000 of the size 2, 1, and 1/0 and I'll tell you right now, the wire is better than the Matzuo sickles, the Eagle Claw version is just as sharp and much stronger but keep in mind, it is still an Aberdeen hook which is designed to bend when a lot of pressure is applied.
