ACarrell
I searched, but didn't find anything. I was wondering if any of you guys have tried Crystalac Crabcoat finish. It's a non-yellowing, UV protected, marine grade coating that looked pretty interesting. From what I can tell, you could just dip it and it dries pretty fast. I'm thinking about trying some, but didn't know if any of you guys had any recommendations regarding this product. Thanks ! http://www.crystalac.info
Nathan
Gene...(Lincoya) was trying that out..I never heard how he liked it as a top coat...He is doing mostly animal carvings now and doesn't build many baits anymore the last I checked..I'll ask him about this...Nathan
ACarrell
Thanks Nathan !
Lincoya
First post in a long while. I have tried it and, so far, I like it. It's not designed for dipping but does dip well. However, with a thick, dipped coat it takes several weeks to completely harden. It will dry to the touch in under 24 hours but you can still dent it with your fingernail two weeks later. Since I haven't made any lures in while I haven't tried spraying it so I can't comment on that part of it. Gene
ACarrell
Gene, thanks so much for the info ... That's a huge help !
bobv
It has an excellent shine to it and passes the 24hr immersion test.
ACarrell
Seems like this might be a viable option, provided you have adequate drying time available. Thanks fellas !
jwfflipper
I called today and talked to them and I was told " it drys hard in 2 hours" But $30 for a qt. don't know if I want to pay that price. But they said it could be thinned with water if needed but will not absorb water. Jeff
ACarrell
I would think that a quart would last a long time And thank you for the additional information, Jeff!
Vodkaman
$30 for a qt. don't know if I want to pay that price. The price has to be put into perspective. Compare with the cost of D2T for example. Dave
Travis
The price has to be put into perspective. Compare with the cost of D2T for example. Dave Need to be careful.....If some looked at what they spend making a lure in materials, tools, and time they might realize how much cheaper it is to buy lures.
Vodkaman
Travis - That is way too much perspective. Cost of lures is best looked at in an orthogonal view. Dave
Nathan
Dave is right about the price...30.00 a quart sounds like a lot of money..but compared to epoxies we use that is actually not to bad..Nathan
ACarrell
Yep .... D2T, for example? Is about $15 for twi 4.5 fluid ounce bottles...so $15 for 9 fluid ounces of actual epoxy. Since a quart is 32 fluid ounces, that would make the cost of Devcon A little over $53 a quart. So darn near twice as expensive as the crab coat. RayburnGuy
Unless your building baits for sale a quart of top coat will go a longggggggg way. Ben
jwfflipper
I spend around 3-4 thousand dollars a year on my components for my baits. I use epoxy about 2% of the time and when I did buy it I bought 4 cases at $2.75 a pack. I'm just saying to buy a gallon it is over $100.00 and I can't see paying that.It might be the cats meow but right now I may wait. mark poulson
What price do you put on sanity? Lure making keeps me sane, or, at least, from getting any crazier!
Vodkaman
Sometimes my paid job is interesting, but it is lure design that gets me buzzin'. If only I could persuade it to pay the bills. Dave
ACarrell
Mark - yeah, I seem to be getting addicted as well! Vodkaman - yeah, wouldn't that be great! Hey, I just wanted to take a second and thank you guys for all the advice you've given me in the short time I've been building lures. You've been super generous with your knowledge and it's really helped me improve quite fast. So, cheers! Here's to you!

mohawkman
How's the odor? It says low odor but is it low enough to use indoors? Like a one bedroom apartment. Edited October 20, 2015 by mohawkman
bobv
I don't like to use anything inside without some ventilation, but this stuff has very little smell........................
mohawkman
Thanks! I use concrete sealer in the garage with the door open in the summer but in the cold season, I'm stuck in the apartment. Garage isn't heated and it's a long cold 50 foot walk to and from the apartment. D2T has been my go to in the cold months but I'm looking for something I can dip and hang. Might give it a shot.
