The poison tail uses a 28 and 30 degree hook and it works really well as a swim jig and there are others but we need to know what you are looking for. smalljaw Posted October 7, 2015 Report Share Posted October 7, 2015 Well that answers my question, you are looking for a swim jig with a heavy hook, that is a specific deal. There are 3 different types of swim jigs, you have the original or what is called the "Northern Style" which is usually no larger than 1/4oz with a 3/0 to 5/0 light wire hook and thin skirt. Then there is the "Coosa River Style" which has a little heavier hook and a little heavier skirt and runs in the 1/4oz to 3/8oz range. Last but not least is the "California Style" which is has a large heavy wire hook, heavy skirt and ranges from 1/2oz to 1oz and it would appear you want something like the California style. Id go with the Trokar Pro Swim Jig, I have it and it is an awesome swim jig, I wasn't sure how I would like the flat eye hook but it ended up being a non issue as it comes through cover and swims true and the hook is a heavy wire. The mold cavities go from 1/4oz to 1/2oz and that allows some versatilityas you can make hybrid swim jigs like a 1/4oz or 3/8oz with a heavy wire hook. cadman Posted October 7, 2015 Report Share Posted October 7, 2015 Like Smalljaw mentioned, I personally like the Poison tail and or the Snootie Jig and or the Pro Swim Jig molds by Do-It. On the Poison Tail if you don't care for the EWG style hook a round bend Mustad 32886 or Eagle Claw L3886 version will fit in there nicely. Also Gamakatsu makes a hook that will fit in that mold as well if you like a stronger hook. People probably would not use a Snootie jig as a swim jig because of the 60 degree hook eye location. However I use it 90% of the time and it works for me. Finally the Pro Swim Jig to me is a take off of the Snootie jig other than it takes a Trokar hook and it is a flat eye hook. The best way to find what works for you is to try these out, and find what suits your fishing style. I know many guys don't like EWG hooks, reason being they miss hooksets. Using that hook takes a different hookset when you fish it and many people don't want to adjust and blame the hook for its design. Good luck with your choice. Im just worried a mustad 32886 might not fit as im one of the guys cadman mentioned who doesnt like ewg jig hooks. There are many hooks that will fit that mold that are flat eye. Naturally the Trokar hook, Mustads 32796, 32798 and its Eagle Claw counterparts, along with Gamakatsu hook 5941 and 614. I use the Eagle Claw L2706BP in my pro swim jig mold, that hook is super strong, heavy diameter and wicked sharp, it is sharper than the Mustad 32796 which is the hook it is meant to replace from Eagle Claw. Don't worry about bad things you hear about Eagle Claw hooks, the new black platinum series is actually better than Mustad and they are even less in price. I use the Snootie as well, that is one of the most versatile jigs made but it has a ball collar although I never had a problem with that, anyway, I think the pro swim is the way to go, you can do large heavy hook swim jigs or even make a 1/4oz with a stout hook for heavy cover. For me, my favorite swim jig, if I had to choose one would be the grass or casting jig, some places sell it as the grass jig and others sell it as the casting jig but it is a cone style that uses the Mustad 32886 or Eagle Claw 3886 which is a nice stout hook in its own right, but I like the 1/4oz size with a 4/0 Eagle Claw L2724BP, that is a light wire hook and the reason I like that jig so much is I can put a 3.5" to 4" swim bait trailer on it and swim it up shallow with a medium power rod with 12lb line and absolutely hammer fish, the light wire hook penetrates with little pressure and I rarely lose a fish, plus I get a lot more strikes on that set up and the heavier hook tears the trailer up a lot faster but if there is a decent amount of cover then the heavy hook swim jig comes into play and it is why I make and use all 3 types. But as Cadman has said, the snootie jig is the work horse of all the molds. It can be used in just about any situation you would use a jig. If I only could have 1 jig mold, it would be it.
