Little Chardy
I like the Boss painted jig, buzzbait, and spinnerbait heads, but they chip. I do paint my own, but sometimes it's hard to find the time before I have the opportunity to sell my finished lures. I would think that if I painted these with the vinyl clear gloss from CS Coatings that they would no longer chip. Has anyone tried this? Does it look good? And what would be the best way to clean them off before painting them with the clear gloss?
smalljaw
Devcon 2-Ton epoxy is stronger, that is if you're talking about the CS clear gloss that Do-it sells in 1oz jars. If that is what you're talking about then I'd say for sure go with the Devcon as that clear coat only offers minimal protection and is more for color enhancement than anything else. You also have to remember, even a good powder coated and cured head will chip eventually even with a good top coat if it is banged against rocks. cadman
First of all powder paint should be baked( cured) in a toaster oven. If you are not doing that, well that is p[art of the problem. I assume Boss powder paint is the same. Now like mentioned above, all paint will chip or wear off from dragging jigs. To reduce this from happening, again like mentioned use Devcon 2 Ton (D2T) on the entire jig. Now you mentioned using vinyl clear gloss from CSI. If you are referring to the one that really smells bad, than I would be careful, because of the lingering smell along with the fact that, that clearcoat is not compatible with all powder paints.
Little Chardy
Thanks for the information. I'm going to try this out. What is the best way to apply it? Do I use a paint brush or should I dunk it? Or is there maybe a better way? My wife hates when I use that cs clear gloss coat. I use it in the garage but the smell gets in the house. I have a 5 year old son and if this is harmful to him it's not worth it.

I have a 5 year old son and if this is harmful to him it's not worth it. When I started doing jigs years ago, I was using CSI's vinyl paint and clearcoat. You are correct the smell is so strong, that it permeates through everything. With that said, I used to get really bad headaches from doing this all day long, and the smell would last for a few days. At the time when I was doing this, powder paint was in its infancy and when I tried it I never looked back. No need to ever use CSI's vinyl paint or clear. Now on powder paint, you can dip the jig in the powder paint or sprinkle it on. On the Devcon 2 Ton, once you mix two equal parts of the epoxy you can brush it on. Only make what you can use in 10 minutes. The epoxy starts to harden once you mix it. Finall make sure you get the 30 minute epoxy not the ten minute. mark poulson
Since my jigs seem to like rocks a lot, and only last a couple of trips before they sleep with the fishes, I use clear nail polish if I want to toughen the finish. They have it for $1 at the dollar stores. But mostly I use it to add glitter. It lets me add whatever soft plastic glitter I want to my standard powder paint colored jigs, when I want it, and give the additional protection, too. I add the glitter to a partial bottle of clear, and it lasts, without melting or gumming up. I just wish I didn't catch so many rocks! LimpNoodle
Concrete sealer would work quite well too.
