rustedhook
Compared to deer hair how much finer is goat hair? I want to tie some longer big white buck tail jigs for ledge fishing in the summer. Places I've looked at that sells it says its 6-8 inches long. Do you think it would work or is it to fine? I used to tie hair jigs years ago but was never really to good at it. I think I've watched everyone of smalljaw's youtube video's and have leaned a lot. My jigs today look a lot better now than they did in the past. Thanks
LimpNoodle
Having had goats in the past I'd have to say it's going to be softer than bucktail.
smalljaw
I never worked with goat hair but there is another way you can go about it. You can use a synthetic called "Yak fur", Barlow's Tackle sells it and it comes in a 20" hank. Use that as a base, then tie in long hackle feathers, look for 7" to 8" ones, tie the hackle, one on each side of the "Yak Fur" and then tie a layer of natural buck tail over top, now you'll have the length and bulk with a little more action than an all natural one. I'm going to say this is your best option, with so many companies making these "ledge" style hair jigs, it is going to hard to find super long buck tail as every place that is making them is sourcing them and there aren't many, they come from special farms where the deer are bred for long tails. You can still find the long buck tail, do a search for "behemoth buck tail", you'll find they are around $12 to $13 per tail and have 5" to 6" long hair, if you cut it close to the hide and pull out the short hair, they will work. I knew of a place to get longer hair but they must have been swamped and sold all their stuff out as I can't find the website anymore, the tails had 6" to 7" hair but the tails were $26 each and since I can't find them anymore I'd say to just get the behemoth or use the "Yak fur" with the natural, and remember, you want the jig to measure 6" to 7" from the tip of the head to the end of the hackle feathers.
