Having Trouble Doing Laminate 702 Craw

Recommended Posts

I have a 702 craw 2 cavity mold and im having trouble getting it to fill the bait to the end, i cut up beer cans and sandwiched it between the mold one on each side of the fill spout, I oiled everything good with pam. When I do the first color it does good i have 4 halfs but then when i put 2 of the halfs back into the mold and inject it never goes to the end, seems it is going on both sides of the half. If anyone has a video or pictures of how they do theirs that would help me alot. I messed with it for along time today and cat get it right. Any help would be appreciated. I wish I hat the bass tackle twin injector kit but its pretty darn pricey.

Im sure youve already tried more heat... Just a thought, maybe a little softener?

My thinking is, once you place your halves in the mold, you also shrink the cavity by half...... A thinner plastic would flow better.... 2 ways to thin plastic.. Heat or softener

Make sure you put the first half in the side of the mold without the vents. Also cut the nose back where the new plastic has an unimpeded entry into your mold. I lam this bait but with a twin injector and it laminates well. The two cavity is actually better for laminating with the twin injector because the sprue is much smaller and not as much waste.

Apdriver that must have been it, I was putting the halves on the vented side, I tried it and it worked Much better but the plastic didnt reach the claws, and i had it heated to 360 degrees with softner added. Could have been that its so cold out the halves were too cold. Thanks for yalls help, think i can get it now with some time

360 is pretty hot. The claws will dent at 360 but, for me, I really don't care and the fish don't either. The claw is pretty thin before it tapers back out and it could be hardening in the thin part, I guess. I've never had much trouble with this mold but you are shooting it differently with the tin can lam. Thinking about this a little more, that part of the claw is thin enough, you may need to just laminate the body and let the claw fill with the second color. What some folks do also is just do a claw color. You know, shoot the bait with the color you want the claw to be and then cut the claws off, put them back in the mold, then shoot the main color. It makes a nice bait too. Here's a pic of one I've done. Bob makes a claw mold for it too.

That's a really pretty bait.

If you have problems with them adhering cut a scarf when you cut off the claws.  It will help.  It increase the surface area to transfer heat, and has a thin edge that may even remelt slightly.  If a scarf joint isn't enough you can try a V cut, but it takes more time.

Sorry for my ignorance but what do you mean by a scarf?

Cut it at an angle so there will be more surface area to stick. A straight cut will have less area to stick. If you want to wait you can put bond coat from Spikeit and it will adhere much better but it takes time to dry.
