fresque93
Hey guys! I was looking at using resin to make some baits and I was wondering if anybody who has used it knows how strong it holds the screw in hook hangers? This will be my first kick at the can in making baits so any advice would be appreciated! Thanks! Jeff
fish pirate
RC 3 and White will both hold screw eyes very well.
fresque93
Oh good thanks! I'll eventually try the thru wire. You got any preference between the white and the rc-3?
fish pirate
Well I pour in aluminum molds, whether silicone or aluminum keep your mold hot, helps get rid of bubbles and speeds cure. I like RC 3. It works good with micro balloons.
ravenlures
You really don't need thru wire just bend the ends, it will hold.
fresque93
Thanks. I'm just trying to figure what's best...obviously trial and error is best. I just find trying to finagle a weight in and around a thru wire on my first baits might be tricky until I've crafted a bunch. Thanks for the advice guys. Vodkaman
Yes, fitting the ballast weight is the biggest issue. Although a through wire is not necessary strength and reliability wise, it does offer you a three point harness to support the weight. A through wire harness is just as easy, if not easier, than making three twisted wire eyes. You just nee to make a simple 3-pin jig (possibly more pins for guiding the bends). Getting the lead onto the wire needs a bit of thinking about, but it is not rocket science. Fitting the lead while using separate eyes is a lot more difficult. I didn't bother trying, I just drilled a hole and filled Dave
fresque93
Thanks Dave, do you cut your lures in half to put the through wire in, or just half way up (or less)? I guess that was my main concern was cutting it in half then trying to glue it back together, ever had problems of it coming apart? Vodkaman
Jeff - I thought we were talking about molding in the ballast and harness. If I was fitting the hardware after pouring, I would definitely go for separate twisted wire eyes and a cylindrical ballast weight and just drill holes.
