bwhite829
Hello! I'm thinking about getting 2 do it molds, 1 for a stand up spinner and one for a regular jig head. I've also sourced a hand me down egg mold and might have secured a 3ft by 25 ft roll of x ray lead. The guy giving it to me said that he has used the lead to cast lots of sinkers but it might be too soft for jig heads. I think for bullet casting the norm is tin and antimony to harden but I'm not sure. How hard does it have to be to use for jigs, and how would I go about hardening it? Jig Man
I've used lots of X-ray lead to make jigs. Where I fish the jig is lost long before any soft lead would come into play on the paint job.
cadman
I'm with Jig Man, the soft lead will be fine. Also it will give you practice if for some reason down the road, you get harder lead. One other question for you and that is which mold are you going to use for a stand-up spinner. If it is the Do-it #3296 (SUS-5-A), Then make sure you get 1623CR hooks not the #1623. The CR stands for crimped hook and it prevents the hook from spinning in the jig. LimpNoodle
Antimony is used to harden the lead and the tin helps it to flow better. I use nothing but pure soft lead for my lure/jig casting. Don't have a problem with it.
