Question On Lead Poisoning.

Recommended Posts

Hello!  As I'm new to lead pouring, a huge concern of mine is safety.  We have a 15 mo old and another on the way, so my duties go farther than just protecting myself.  I have to keep my family in mind any time I come up w/ a new hobby that has any kind of safety concerns.  I was watching a video on lead pouring and the guy wore the clear plastic full face mask as well as long jeans, thick flannel shirt, of course the welders gloves, etc.  This is probably overkill but better safe than sorry for reasons stated above.  I was reading on the safety thread about a bare arm burn and then another person remarked that he has a battle scar.  I know typically lead is not absorbed through skin unless it is a certain kind of lead.  If you get a burn, it of course burns through many layers of skin depending on the degree of burn you are talking about.  Are burns w/ lead typically 1st degree or up to 3rd degree?  If it is a 3rd degree or severe burn do you run the risk of absorbing lead through the skin since that barrier has been broken?

I've been pouring lead for a lot of years.  I wear some kind of eye protection and pour in the garage.  I quit pouring in shorts after some lead splashed on my leg.  All I could do was sit and watch it cool.  I get quite a bit of lead on jeans when my pot is dripping and I'm too lazy to stop it  but that is no concern as it doesn't burn my skin.

I am sure you read a lot about lead so I will not bore you with the details. However safety is always the #1 concern for you and your family. I wear long sleeve shirt(even in the summer), long pair of jeans, shoes, socks, eyeglasses and a face shield that I keep 3/4's of the way down over my face. Is this an extreme, well I'll leave that up to you. My most valuable asset on my body are my eyes, If you burn your eyes well then your whole life might change, not to say that you can't burn your arm or leg real badly. So I'll leave you with that.

Now as far as anything else goes.

**Make sure you don't eat, drink or smoke while pouring lead.

**Make sure you are not distracted while pouring lead.

**All your focus and concentration should be about pouring and everything around you.

** Leave you cell phone and everything else in your house. Many times I've jumped when I heard the phone ring

**Leave, wife, parents, kids, animals and other distraction in the house and tell them not to bother you

**When pouring make sure you are by your pot all the time, so no-one touches it or something catches fire.

There are a lot more things I am sure I missed, but safety is #1 to all parties involved. Finally if you are going to pour a lot or even moderately, get a blood test every year. It is worth it to make sure your lead levels aren't climbing

Have a container of simple green towelettes handy. Wipe off your working surface and any tools you touch. It's best to vent lead fumes to the outside- check ventilation pull w/ something that creates smoke and follow the trail. Make sure any and all duct work is sealed. Lead dust9from finishing off sprue ends can be very detrimental to your health.

Having an annual lead blood level test is sage advice.Small children should not be permitted in your work area.

Pouring lead lures can be rewarding  and safe if you follow precautions.

I'm a Plumber, I was trained by my Master Plumber 28 years ago and how to lead in cast iron joints. I leaded joints like crazy the first five years before newer drain materials came out. Here are some pointers

Pour lead out side with a small fan to move the vapors away.

use a good pot to pour

get good quality lead-- plumbers lead is super clean / less tin in the lead

No children around to distracted or touch the lead

I pour all my lead drop shot, spinner baits, jigs, darter etc... in the summer on dictated whole day of pouring

long sleeve and mechanic rubber gloves for handing the lead after cold to trim excess lead

   Good luck!
