rfdong
Anyone figure out how to take shine off tungsten weights? Don't really need to color per se just want some of the shine off. Powdercoat can be a bit of a mess, pita for what I want. Vinegar doesn't seem to do it like lead. Thanks
Vodkaman
I just had a read about tungsten. It is only affected by the strong acids, but you do not want to be messing about with hydrochloric and nitric acids. Tungsten does not combine with oxygen at room temperatures, but it will corrode above 400C (700F). So this is your best option, heat it up with a gas torch for a few minutes and let it cool slowly. There is no danger of it melting. Dave
mark poulson
Ken Mah, a prominent West Coast angler, posted a how-to video in which he heated tungsten weights with no inserts over a propane torch, and the tungsten changed color permanently. I use a sharpie, and repeat as needed.
Scottsecs
Saw a recent video posted by Trevor Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald Rods in FL about heating insert-free tungsten weights over a torch and then dunking them in ice water - supposedly makes them a dull grayish color permanently. i think this is the link -
Apdriver
If Trevor used MAP gas as opposed to the propane, it wouldn't take near as long to achieve the desired temp. Should be located with the propane at the store. Yellow can.
