Here's the plan: We send in the lures to the panel and they take a good hard look at them. Evaluation would have to be honest and we all know that "honesty sometimes hurts". After the results were published (if the lure maker wishes) the lures are then auctioned off or sold in the Supply Shop. I don't sell my stuff, but I would like to know where my techniques, color schemes and finished products could be improved on and I don't mind positive critisim. If I am opening up a can of plastic worms here, just say "shut up Mike" and I'll go back to making jigs instead of stringing beads. I dont really need feedback on my stuff cause it is all simple jigs and stuff that i mainly make for the bays here and they work well. I'd like to get a group of writers together to contribute news & articles on a regular basis, Reviews is a big help to those lookin to improve thier designs. I have Uncle Wes on the news crew & Skeeter has been helpful with writing articles for us. Id be willing to form a group of writers, one of the perks would be product reviews, Maybe correspondents from different areas of the country. I also want some people to cover local expos & shows on TU's behalf, I'd be willing to cover entry fees & provide some gear to wear in return for articles. I'm gonna try & tour the Bagley facility in Fort Myers soon & see if they'll grant me some interviews & photos. If anyone has ideas, feel free to chime in. Let me know where this goes im interested in everything mentioned. I like the different areas for the"panel" being on the west coast i have some very different points of view because i saltwater fish freshwater fish bayfish and kayak when fishing most the time. Prince Rupert B.C.....This has got to be the Salmon fishing hotspot on this planet! Add a side order of bottom fish, with halibut over 200lbs caught regularly, and crabs that just wont stay out of your traps. If anyone has ever thought of taking a charter, or bringing your boat up to western Canada don't miss this one! After showing our charter Capt. how to use bucktails to nail scrappy Coho on the surface, I left a couple behind for him to try with clients. Two weeks later he called me up to order more. He said his customers had caught at least 40 Coho and several big Chinook on the two flies I left! I even managed to find some handmade lures for Salmon trolling in a shop out there! The type of feedback offered in such a manner would be invaluable to me. So if and when you get this going please let me know. I'd also like to offer my services on writing articles. I'm just a neophyte when it comes to serious fishing and lure making but I have been at it (fishing) since I was 4 and have fished in the SouthEast US, Atlantic US and now in Western Canada so I think I may have something to offer in an opinion on styles, methods & the diversity thereof. Also Calgary is the fly fishing center of the known universe (well claims to be anyway) and has a great resource pool from which to draw in the local shops and fly fishing community. There are several fishing shows a year here as well. Again, Great great ideas and would like to be involved if possible. How would you like to set it up Red?Skeeter Well in a broader scope I want to gather a group or team of article contributors around North America to keep a finger on the tackle & fishing activity in there respective areas for our news section. Like attending events or visiting local manufacturers' date=' or simply reporting on hot tackle thats producing in thier area. Its not exactly limited to tackle, but fishing in general. The product/field testing would be one aspect of the groups focus. I have stuff sitting here that needs tested myself :oops: So if makers need an honest review they'd send in the product, based on the area/s they want it tested in. The recipient author/contributor/correspondent (call it what you like) gets a chance to try the product first hand & report in thier findings here in the news section. I'm making note of the replies & making a list of everyone thats interested in contributing along with a list of makers who would like a product review. The only things I ask of the news staff is that they are able to make time to really committ to this project, remain unbiased, own & use a camera for the articles. & be able to publish at least one article a month. As far as publishing the articles, its as easy as posting in our forums, so no other technical skills needed. To better answer your question skeeter, Id start a group of news staff members, from different reigons (Fresh & Saltwater), assign a group leader as the editor. as you know, we already have a news section I can spiffy up. some sections are already there but empty awaiting input: [b']Member Spotlight[/b] (monthly member interview) General (just that, but needs expanding...too general ) Reviews (product reviews) Call to action (environmental & political issues related to fishing) According to Wes (our satire contributor) We can make as many sections as needed, so I'd leave it up to the staff to redesign & manage the section. maybe even add a newsletter function so members could choose to get the news via email. The site's free, the news/letter would also be free so I cant pay anyone but im workin my tail off so I can cover event fees (minus travel) in most cases plus send you gear to wear to represent the site. I dont see why we couldnt allow "Guest articles" from members who wanna contribute only when they feel the need. Sorry Cavu for hijacking your topic, but what you propose could be covered this way & the tester could obviously keep the product in exchange for the testing. Having TU is all the payment i and most others would rather have. Now in the testing of the lures or whatever you wanna call it, What happens with the lure after testing? Mike (Cavu) mentioned selling off the item to benefit the site, if thats what the group chooses, then the proceeds should go to the news team to help the group. Just my opinion. Just a small fee to help benefit the site. PLus is a used lure gonna bring too much money? and having a good artical writen will bring publicity to the crafter. Lures i test usually get pretty beat up cause i fish them hard and in all ways i can plus the fish in the bay will ding up baits pretty well. I would also like to suggest that each tester fill out a form indicating what type and style of fishing they are experienced in so there would be a good match. Also, each member that submits a bait to be tested could send two identical baits. The one that will be tested (beaten up) and one for auction. It would be a welcome change to go and test baits and report on the results, objectively of course. I would like to submit my weird worms as well for critique. I think it would be a good idea to have a set testing period for each bait, say 3-4 hours of fishing it hard. Standardizing the results would be the hardest part of it. If we can make this work, I would be more than willing to cover the local sportsmans show in the SF Bay Area. I live about a mile from the beach, so saltwater would be easy to cover too . Albacore, Halibut and Ling Cod are ON right now...unfortunately our boat was destroyed by a drunk driver before the groundfish season opened! It was parked, poor girl! Maybe like an hour here an hour later when conditions are different. Like ive been fishing a lot of nights/ evenings laatly but then go fish afternoons on the weekend. Maybe we can hook up and do a Fred Hall show at Del Mar or Long Beach (can do weekends only). I am willing to be a "submitter" as well as a "tester". I fish saltwater (inshore/offshore) but mostly in Baja, now Costa Rica (river, estuary, and inshore), and Lake Perris for big bluegill. They are there but not bitting. When is fred hall in del mar? i havnt heard anything yet but i love that show.
