keysd13
Anyone have any tips on how to achieve the "fur" look on rat/mouse type baits? I've seen some awesome work on these types of baits, but can't find any clues or tips when searching.
Richard Prager
You might try a Calligraphy pen using the airbrush paint. They have different size tips...pretty inexpensive. I think a whole kit of 10 interchangeable tips run about $12....Michaels w/40% coupon
mark poulson
In the past I've used sharpies, but the best way I've found for me is to score the surface of the bait to get parallel lines, like fir running front to back. I use a sawzall blade like a scraper. http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/gallery/image/15396-otter7/

BobP
Littleriver paints his lures using a semi-dry brush and many brush strokes to build up the color and texture. Nice effect and I think it would work great to represent mouse fur.
Uncle Jay
Another thing you could try is mixing some sawdust into a small amount of paint and dabbing it on with a stiff bristle brush. If you dab it on with a slight head to tail motion, you may be able to achieve what you are looking for. Let it air dry. If you use a heat gun or hair dryer, you will blow the sawdust-paint mixture right off your lure. If you are going to finish it with a coat of epoxy, I suggest spraying it with a good clear coat first to hold it all together. Good luck to you. This was not my idea. I read it one of my many lure building books years ago. If I can remember what book it was in, or If I see it when I look thru them once in while, I will let you know so you can get a copy.
clemmy
Another option would be to flock it like the old Heddon Meadow Mouse
clemmy
Or you could do a search here on TU for photo finish, but do a picture of fur or a rat instead of a shad/bluegill
keysd13
BobP, I think the brush may be the way to go. I'll make an extra mouse to try it on. Uncle Jay, let me know if you find that book, I'd sure like to check it out. Thanks
RayburnGuy
Have you tried youtube? There's a video on there somewhere that shows how to paint fur by shooting paint through the fanned out fibers of a paint brush. Looks pretty good. Mountain Man 26
John, did the craft hair hurt the action of the bait at all?
jrhopkins
worked ok. actually the 'fur' is the cover from a stuffed animal. here's another I made for a guy who wanted a red head.? I didn't put fur between the joints and I used scissors to give it a "buzz cut"
