Groucho
Been reading some on this site and came across a thread on slow willow blades that was interesting. I tried to find them but to no avail. Are they called something else or how can I tell the difference from the others willows on the sites. I would like to make a good 3/8oz. spinnerbait for slow rolling in the early spring and late fall. Any suggestions? another question: the 30' or 70" rolls of stainless wire for spinnerbaits do they straighten out fine? Thanks
cadman
Just my personal opinion, but I would not use rolled stainless steel wire. I have always had bad luck when it comes to keeping in straight. You can buy straight pieces at McMaster Carr. Also why not buy pre-bent, as it will be more consistent from spinnerbait to spinnerbait, Unless you want a custom size wire. As far as slow roll willow, maybe some one else has heard of this, but I have not, with that said, if you put on a good ball bearing swivel, even the cheapest of blades will spin when slow rolled. mark poulson
I use an Indiana for the rear blade, with a smaller Colorado in front, for my slow roll tandem spinnerbaits. The Indiana gives more thump, and more lift, at slower speeds, than the willow. Coat it with nail polish with mylar bits in it, and it flashes like a light house even at slow speeds.
JBlaze
The worth Co. makes a spinner blade called a slow willow blade. I have some of them and their regular blades in size 4.5. They do as stated. It starts spinning at a slower retrieve and also has a wider arc, (more thump) than their regular blade. It has a little less cupping than their regular willow blade. If you hold it up at just the right angle to the light you can see a slight flat spot on the top of the blade. I don't know who carries/sells the Worth blades. I bought mine direct from the Worth Co. several years ago. Hope this helps you. John
JBlaze
I second Cadman's opinion on the wire. I have made my own from rolled wire and was not happy with them. the straight wire is better. Pre-formed are even better, but in my honest opinion the best wire out there is called super stainless pre-bent forms. Barlows tackle and LPO carries it in Camo. It is a little more expensive than the regular stainless forms but well worth the extra money. Couple that with a worth swivel and blade/blades and you'll have some of the best spinner baits you have ever used. smalljaw
They are called "Shallow Cup willows" and John is correct, they spin in a wider arc and you get more vibration. I use to use them for deep running spinnerbaits because you can crawl them so you don't get lift because that blade with a good swivel lets you reel an incredibly slow speeds. JBlaze
Hello smalljaw, and I was also wrong. you are correct, its proper name is as you said shallow cup willows. I called it a slow willow blade, its been a while since I have used them. Thanks. John They are called "Shallow Cup willows" and John is correct, they spin in a wider arc and you get more vibration. Groucho
Thanks for all the info but the next question is where to buy them. I know worth co. Has then but by the thousand, with different sizes and then colors a small fortune will be invested in just that type blades. I really just want to make a few for myself and fishing buddies. I just like making my own stuff. Is there a place where the mim. are less? Does all super stainless spinnerbaits forms come in camouflage. JBlaze
I used to get the super stainless forms in the stainless steel color from Barlows. They quit carrying them for some reason for several years. a couple of years ago they came back out with it but in the camo pattern. Barlows sells it in a 25 ct pkg for $6.62. I like the camo wire as well if not better than the original shiny wire. Hope this is of some help. John
