luther#3
Hey Fellas, I have been a long time onlooker of this site. I have been making smaller crankbaits for a year or so with some good success. This site has been a lot of help with that. Now I have been getting into some bigger style baits for muskies and bass. I have been working on a few baits including a rat wake bait. I want to try using magnets in the rats to reduce hook rash. Since they are just prototypes at this point I want to keep them in decent shape to be able to use them as the master for future baits. I was wondering what type of magnets anyone uses and any information on them would be helpful. -Anthony
RayburnGuy
I haven't built any musky sized baits Anthony, but did build some glider/twitch type lures that had such an erratic action that the line was getting fouled in the belly hook. My solution was to epoxy a super magnet behind the belly hook. I drilled a hole the same size as the magnet far enough behind the belly hook so the shank of the hook would center itself on the magnet when the hook was folded back along the belly of the bait. The hole was drilled deep enough that about 1/4 of the magnet stuck above the surface of the lure. This insured good contact between the magnet and the hook. The super magnet was strong enough to hold the hook while casting, but not so strong that it interfered with setting the hook. You can find super magnets of various sizes on eBay. hope this helps, Ben
hazmail
Anthony- as Ben says , "super magnets" are the go here, just make sure you water proof them, with magnets, electrolysis is public enemy No1 here - I have been using them (3mm) with my snagless hook setup in salt water and had to seal them off with epoxy to stop any corrosion - fresh water would be less of a problem, but still a problem.. RayburnGuy
Good catch Pete. I didn't think to mention that I installed the magnets before painting and top coating. Thanks for picking up on that. Ben Edited March 28, 2016 by RayburnGuy

RayburnGuy
Thanks Mark. The paint job pretty much sucks, but the action is crazy. It looks like a spastic minnow that had a bag of meth dumped on it. Ben
diemai
Years ago I had used magnetic sheet to assist in fixing hookshanks against a lurebody . I bought this about 5" x 3" sheet in a local hardware store , wasn't too expensive . The foil is about 1,5 millimetres thick and has an adhesive backing , just like duct tape . One can cut it to size with strong scissors or snips . Glued it into the lure blank with a drop of epoxy and painted and topcoated it over finally , it would not lose it's function due to the paint coats . Here is a crude video of the lure blank showing the magnet sheet pieces embedded into pouches cut into the back od the lure at 0:30 , ....sorry for inconvinience , but somehow that video had lost quite a few frames , yet the subject is still visible . mark poulson
Dieter, That is a clever idea, and well executed!
diemai
Dieter, That is a clever idea, and well executed! Thanks , Mark , ...but so far it remained the only one of this type , always too many new ideas on my mind . Greetings , Dieter
