Makosnax
Does anyone know the 90degree equivalent to a mustad 32786 60 degree? I'm having trouble finding the hook diameters. The reason I'm asking is, I'm looking to use the same size hooks in a do it 5,6,8 mold but want to change eye degree to add a touch of length as the size of the jig increases
cadman
There are many hook diameters close to within +/- .002 that are similar to a Mustad 32786 hook in a 90 degree. You didn't specify if it had to be a Mustad hook. Also tell us what Do-It mold # you have, so we can narrow it down to what will fit. Also which cavities you are referring to. I am confused on what this means "in a do it 5,6,8 mold" BTW welcome to TU. Edited May 6, 2016 by cadman
Makosnax
The mold is an SHR-3-568. Was wondering if there was a hook the same as 32786 but in a 90 degree bend. Thanks
smalljaw
That mold uses a 90 degree hook, it uses the Mustad 91715, the smaller 1.5oz mold uses the 32786. The 91715 is a massive hook and the mold you are using requires a 9/0, I never did jigs that size so I'm not sure of you could go up or down any sizes but the only other hook I think might fit would be a 7/0 Owner 5319 but if it only thr 90 degree you are worried about then you are fine as it uses a 90 degree as the stock hook. You can however use a stainless steel eye and then cut the eye of the hook off and place it at the desired length in the mold. I am not sure it would be worth the work though. You would have to cut the eye off as close to the eye as possible so the hook will not be loose or pull out. You will also risk the hook spinning around in the mold before you actually mold the head. I can't guarantee this would work but it is an option. Edited May 6, 2016 by JBarlow
cadman
Mako, I have the SHR-3-L mold which is the next mold down on cavity sizes. I have a customer that did not like tin plated hooks, so I decided to see if the 32786 hooks fit my mold and they do. Now I would have to check at home to see which hooks fit which cavities, but it is workable in my situation. Now your situation calls for 9/0 hooks, I believe that Mustad 32786 only comes in an 8/0. With that said, these hooks may be too small in proportion to fit your three large sizes. Also with a little filing of the hook eye in the mold, you will be able to get an 8/0 (32786 hook) in all three cavities, as I did that in my molds. The question still remains, if the hooks will bee too small, that is a call you will have to make. If you want a longer hook shank, than I know that only the EC 630,635 and 91715 are the only ones that have really long hook shanks in a 7/0 and greater size. cadman
I just saw Barlow's pic, and you can use a 60 degree or a 30 degree bend hook and set it back in the cavity, onto which you can tie it into a ring as pictured above. Hook spinning will not be an issue if you leave the hook eye in tact. If you have a problem with the 60 degree fitting, put a kink in the hook shank. You can bend it enough (about 15-30 degrees) and keep it from cracking.
JBarlow
Also...please note that the steel eye I used in the picture was an extra long eye not a regular length eye.
Makosnax
Thanks for the help. I was playing around with it a while ago and I also think the eyelet will be my best option. I'm toying with the idea of adding a small piece of aluminum angle to the side of the mold to create a platform to keep the hooks from spinning. I'm gonna cast all of my 91715s before I modify it to take the 32786s. I'll post pics after I modify it. Thanks again
