Whats The Best Topcoat Out There?

Recommended Posts

I've used KBS and stuck with it because I've had such good luck,I use devcon on my jigs but I always wonder if there is something better out there.

Personally never used KBS but don't think I would switch from it to anything else currently if using it.

Everyone looks for something different..some guys simply are looking for something cheap, some guys are simply looking for something than can drive and get in the same town, some are looking at doing 5 baits a month/some 100s,....

I tried AC1315 and hated it. That being said, if you like it, stick with it! I have tried Solarez, and like it under crank baits, I use KBS a lot. It's pretty much my favorite all around now. Ive used D2T and didn't mind it either. I use Art resin on my larger glide baits. It's all personal preference. I swear once a month someone asks a topcoat question (usually it's me). If you like your coffee black, then drink it black! It all depends on situation, and what you can make work for yourself.

I have to agree with all so far. I have used several different coatings. I only changed for a reason. D2T is a hassle and heavy to me, but I'll use it. Then another did well but did not give a glass look so I changed again. There are others that I tried some not mentioned, some didn't do well.

Are these better then the another? No each serves a particular purpose for me now. The reason I say this is what BobP stated at me about trolling lures and a retrieving bait (cranks). This made sense to me. Then if I am looking for a flat look, a more natural look I use another. Each serves a purpose.

If your happy....it is the one!

Thanks for the replies guys! Honestly I used clear nail polish coat on jigs in the past but the first true hardcoat I ever tried was KBS and never knew of anything else out there unless you use devcon. Which don't get me wrong, devcon is great but I'm lazy and don't want to mix two parts. Sometimes my batchs of baits are 60-80 or several hundred with jigs or sometimes they're just 10 baits or less. I like KBS so much because it's good to use right from the store (summit auto carries it and they're only 30 minutes away on the way to several lakes). Usually I thin the KBS though after several uses since every time air gets in the can it starts to thicken it and that stuff isn't cheap! I found it great as a sealer for crankbaits as well.

Aren't you lucky?! Summit just down the road, I have to wait a week! Hahaha.

What do you thin it with? Does it set it off? I tried acetone and I think it set it off.

@ Basscat, I am feeling that you maybe are looking for a less costly coating. If I'm right try a MCU like BobP stated. I believe that KBS is higher then a product like Dick Nite's (DN) which is a MCU.

I use MCU now myself. I have never used KBS but I have read up on it. To this point in time, I'm pretty happy with DN but it would be nice if the store was 30 mins. away. :) 30 mins. away would add to my liking a product. I'm starting to notice that more then a few use MCU here.

I have to make a bunch of jigs, bucktails, darts soon and I will check out DN on these. I have a few baits with DN on them and these are in my tackle bag and ready to go.

I got a fishing trip to get started on in a few hours. So I'll put them through a test against some rocks. :) All of you take care for a week or so. I hope to have a pic. of a nice Smallmouth(s).

Chat soon,

Dale

KBS is a MCU...I've tried dozens of products through the years and KBS is the easiest product to use I've found and it does a great job.It is a MCU that doesn't go off in the can like others.I've got a quart canning jar full that I have dipped well over a hundred baits in.If it starts getting a little thick, just a a little xylene to it.When I'm done dipping I add a shot of "Bloxygen" to it and seal it up. Two dips is close to one coat of Devcon..Nathan

I've never used KBS always D2T...are we talking about Diamond Finish Clearcoat...can it be brushed ?? Or does it need to be dipped & hung??? Read that it may seal the lid shut any suggestions about that problem ?? Does it have a "lets get high odor" (lol) ? thanks,  mike

Yes it is the Diamond Clear Coat....and yes you can seal the can shut..(again, please don't ask me how I know that..lol)...I transferred mine into a mason canning jar.Just Besure to wipe the lip clean before sealing it up

I've always just dipped mine but I don't see why you couldn't brush it on...As for the smell..it is pretty strong..I do my dipping in a large shop. I will say I've tried products that smelled a lot stronger..Nathan

KBS is by a long shot the best clear coat finish I have used. I have been making baits for near 30 years and have tried just about everything available to me... I may be one of the first to really brag about it on this site. I think everybody that I know that has tried it, Loves it... I also think thinning 20%-30% with xylene/xylol makes it work even better.

When adding the xylene do you just mix it with a Popsicle stick or do you do anything special? Next time I hit home Depot I will have to get some!

I second the canning jar. I bought a sample size and within a month the can got unusable and I inevitably spilled it off the counter trying to open it. I brushed it on with that can, and it went on great. When I graduated up to a pint I eventually had to move it into a canning jar. I also have tinfoil just wrapped around the lid for added security. Unless you are very very careful and clean out the lid on the can, it will bubble up when you close it and eventually it is just unusable. The canning jar is a little easier to clean up and prevents that from happening.
