Albogator
I'm looking to make some of my own blade baits. I have a couple of the do-it molds. But ive seen a style that I really like but can't seem to find a mold for it anywhere. So my question is, has anyone come across different brands and styles of molds? Or has anyone created their own mold? If so, how did you pull it off? Thank you for any and all help.
Basseducer
Do-It currently has two blade bait molds. There is a third that is out of production, this old mold closely resembles the Silver Buddy. Once in a while one comes up on Ebay, but that is rare. 21xdc
What "style" are you wanting? I have made/modified many blade bait molds. Some don't and wont vibrate. I have spent a lot of time and money doing this. They can be weight, shape finicky.
Albogator
Thank you both for responding. I will find a picture and post it. You mention you spent a lot of time and money. Was it worth it? Did you ever get it to where you wanted it to be?
Albogator
Hopefully I was able to post pic.
21xdc
I prefer the lead to be mostly on the head as the one you posted will allowthe hooks to catch and foul the lead edge...
walleyeking
I like it but I'm pretty sure it's a custom mold.
mark poulson
I'm sure this is probably a dumb question, but couldn't you make this mold work, with a little JB weld alterations? http://store.do-itmolds.com/Shad-Blade-LurebrSz-12-34brHk-35517-or-3551brCollar-NA_p_1000.html
Albogator
Thanks again for all your input. Maybe i will look into finding a machinist or something and have them make me something. I saw that do-it molds sell molds so we can make our own. Thank you. Be safe.
jonister
Wait mark are you talking about making a mold or adding to a mold with jb weld or using it on the lure? If jb weld could hold up to the heat could you make a whole mold out of it? @ Albogator you might get better answers in the wire/jig forums, but if you could find that exact bait and the insert for it, you could make a mold with some heat resistant silicone. They don't last as long but are cheaper than an aluminum mold and if you end up not liking the lure, it won't break your bank and leave you with a custom aluminum mold you won't use.
mark poulson
jonister, I've only ever used it for filling in places in aluminum molds, so I don't know if you could make a whole mold out of it. I'm guessing that somewhere along the line there would be issues, like warping from different thickness, and being too brittle, but those are only guesses. I like your idea of a silicone mold. And I agree that Albogator would probably get better answers on the wire baits forum, since those guys work with this kind of thing all the time. jonister
I'd imagine jb weld would also be a pain to work with on large scale and at 8$ a tube it would take quite a bit, and get quite expensive. The Silicone is great stuff. I believe it is smoothe-on that sells it. It is high strength and high heat resistant, and will take hundreds and hundreds of pours before it starts to break down.
