New Bait

Recommended Posts

That bait turned out really good Mark.  I have to see it's action in the water soon.  The black pvc looks evil! It should fish meaner too.  I have not had time to work on baits or fish for over a week.  I have been putting that outboard motor together and will not finish until next week.  Headed for Alabama in a couple hours to the Forrest Wood Cup(no I'm not fishing it) and the Junior World Championship where Larry Snow III is representing CA.  You should have a good idea of how that bait fishes by the time I get back.

Dale,

Your secret is safe with me.  Shhhhh!!!!

Nathan,

I've never built a cedar bait, so I can only speak about balsa baits in relation to this material.

It is not as buoyant as balsa, so it is not quite as lively, but it is really close.

Barry,

Give me a shout when you get back, and I'll drop it off for you to play with.

While you're gone, I'm going to make a bait just like+- the 3/4" X 3 1/4" baits I made that work so well, to see if it is an improvement on the AZEK material.

You can help me compare the two.

Have a great trip, and a safe Journey.  Tell Larry Snow III to "Carry on my wayward son".  Sorry, couldn't resist.

jonister,

The material I was given is called Celtec, and it is used for signage.  Sintra is another material that is similar.

You can google it, and see both the manuf.'s site and some online sources.

I don't know if Home Depot or Lowes carries it.

It is more expensive than AZEK, but it is a superior building material to me, so far.  Smoother, more homogeneous material, finer "grain" so I was able to sand it smoother prior to painting, no primer needed (same with AZEK), no small bubbles when heat setting paint (which does happen with AZEK).

Of course, the bait I made may explode, in which case my opinion would probably change, but, otherwise, I like it.

I'm hoping to use the 1/4" I was given to make a through wire laminated bait.  That will be a challenge, since I will have to figure out how to glue the hardware in strongly, and still use PVC prime and glue to do the actual lamination.

That's one of my next projects.

Nathan,

It holds them just fine.  I drill a small pilot hole, run the screw eye in and back out again, coat the screw part with gap filling super glue, and then run it back in.  The squeeze out locks the eye once it sets, so no unscrewing.  I've had occasion to remove a screw eye done like this, and it was solid!  I had to use pliers on the eye to get it to begin unscrewing.

Dale,

I've never has a screw eye fail with AZEK.

Since screw eye pullout is a concern, you can do a simple test.

Take a bait, or test block, with a screw eye attached at each end, tie on a length of the fishing line you will be using to one end, tie off that line to an overhead bar, and then tie a weight to the bottom screw eye.

You can use rope for the bottom line to the weight, if it will let you have a open container basket at the bottom, to which you can add increasingly heavier weights.

I think you'll find, whether you're using mono, fluoro, or braid, the line or knot will break long before the screw eye fails.

We always try to make our baits bullet proof, but it's really not necessary.

I know a crew would be stronger then wire. The material, don't know.

But here's a FYI for ya,

I took regular wire hangers, straight and super glued them into wood and put 55 lbs. of lead against the wood and hangers for 3 days. Then I raised the lead up 6" and dropped it until the bucket and wire gave way. Don't hold me exactly to the weight and days, I think the time and weight were more.

Point is that it should be fine if Mark says it will.

I think if you do hook a big fish, use your drag, and "don't horse em' ". As dad always says. you will be just fine!

I know we all want to know what our lures can take though! Haha.

Mark, I google this material you are talking about and understand what you said earlier about the price! It was more than I was expecting, and more than I want to drop to carve a few cranks!

Jointster consider this, your in a small shallow river. The river has fast rapid water. The drag is set to allow a run, but a chase by me. The area of the run is limited and the line is as low in strength as possible. All parts must be right. :)

With that in several place that I fish I follow that in all my baits.

Hey Mark I'm back where's my lure!  Haha.  I'm looking forward to checking  them out.  Just got back from Alabama where we hosted the TBF Junior World Championships and also went to the Forrest Wood Cup blast off and final weigh in and to the Exhibit Hall.  Larry Snow III represented CA well, he pre fished and had a good bite going had a solid tournament fishing plan and executed it well.  Just got beat out by the Arizona state champion for our division (western) to fish on the final day.  Too bad but it's not easy, these kids can fish!  In the end, Fisher Davis won the title of TBF Junior World Champion 2016.  If the name sounds familiar, it is because it is Mark Davis's son.  Yes, the crankbait fishing guru,  which is why this is still sort of on topic.  This has been a very rewarding experience for me and I would encourage anyone who is capable to help your local youth team and be a boater for these kids on their tournaments.  If your're close to me here or just want more info, pm me.  Thanks.

Back on topic,  I bought a couple of balsa baits while I was there at the show, one circuit board lip and one prop bait to check out.  Both Black Label Balsa, Cliff Pace baits.  So Mark and I can compare those baits with ours too.  Just have a few chores in the way right now of course but we will get to it!

@Dalesw, I do understand where you come from, and agree that strength still is important! I fish the rivers around here and the smallies can be brutal, especially in the rocks! :haha: I prefer through wire most of the time on anything that I think might pull out anyways.
