Centerpindrew
Hello all. I have a quick newbie question and I apologize if it is listed in another thread.. Question: How harmful is it to breathe in the fumes from the Plastisol or reheated plastics when making soft plastic baits? Does it really create that many fumes? Any recommendations on helping to keep the fumes down such as using a bench top fume extractor? Or is this not really necessary? Thanks in advance! -Centerpindrew
JRammit
good first question!.... regardless of how many times its been discussed, safety is always an important topic i dont know all the scientific info, but i do know the fumes are harmful!.... i hope to never learn of the long term affects, but i have experienced nasty headaches when my fan got bogged down from lack of cleaning...... i have basically a "cubical" on top of my bench with a duct fan plumbed down through the shop floor... it was effective for a few months, then after cleaning the blades it is back in business another, maybe better option is a box fan in a window (if you have a window)..... however you can, you need ventilation
Apdriver
Yes you definitely need some kind of fume evacuation or wear an organic respirator while you are working with the plastisol. I use a big commercial size vent a hood and really like it.
Driftwood
You can also use a range hood. Just change the filter often.
JRammit
Ever have a bit of grass on a crankbait or a little on your trolling motor. It doesn't take much to totally destroy the flow. I imagine its no different with the fan blades on your extractor. problem was i used my plastic station for a paint booth also.... spray paint is a great dust collector! lesson learned... now i use the big box our new pool (/my new test tank) came in for a paint booth Edited August 4, 2016 by JRammit
Slammingjack
Yes the stuff ain't good for you. Fans, open windows. open outside doors and respirator. That's what you need.
