Drop Shot Mold

Recommended Posts

If you don't have any drop out, shake baby powder on it and blow off the bulk, this does work wonders, Drop out as Bob pointed out is the shiznit IMO, I design all our lead molds in conjunction with dropout myself. Also stick the nozzle of the pot right down in the mold, just pull out before it gets hard. you can also do the old candle smoke method, Hold it over the candle so the candle soot coats the cavity.

You can buy some blaster dry graphite spray at Home Depot. I love using it. One thing I've found with difficult to pour molds is using a ladle and pouring a lot right at the beginning. On small molds I would try and not hit the hole so it would go down hotter. Later I found out that filling the sprue with as much lead as possible works best.

Yes I too love Drop Out.

Tilting the molds is sometimes what it needs. I have a couple of molds that require that to fill properly.

Another thing to try is using a scratch awl or similar tool to put a very small vent to the cavities that do not fill. this will allow the air to escape. just do one side of the mold.

I have about 100 do it molds. I never coat them with anything. When they don't work, I find that about 70% of the time the lead is not hot enough, 20% it is due to pouring technique (ladle vs spout, size of the stream) and the other 10% is due to the composition of the lead.
