Pid (Temperature Controller) For Plastisol Heating And The Need For A Small Pot

To control Temperature for Plastisol the best thing to do is get a PID Temperature Controller. One can control the temperature see examples of units in links. One needs to know what voltage, amps and temperature range their working with. Some of the suppliers we all buy our Plastisol supplies from that are making injection equipment or heating pots use PID controllers.

 

Some PID's come as kits some you buy SSR and Temp probe separate. I can control Lyman and Lee melting Pots with Plastisol with Automatic Stirrers.

Does anyone else use a PID (Temperature Controller) ?

 

I am also looking for some sort of POT/Canister about the size of a Lyman or Lees melting POT, either Cast Iron, Aluminum etc .... to make a smaller injection machine. I don't want the heater and the dispenser that the Lees pot has in it,  I just want a container. I will then add a PID controller a Band Clamp heater, a automatic stirrer and some other items for injecting. At this time a Presto pot system is too large I want to make a smaller system anyone have any ideas of a pot ?

Could you use a sst kitchen pot, with a copper bottom liner?  They come in a lot of different sizes and shapes.

Great Idea Mark I looked at pots and they just werent the shape i wanted but something you said made me find this. Now if i could get a somewhat thick wall on these. Asking for a lot im sure

I have seen presto pots with lids and a stirrer made into pressurized injection systems.

I am in the same boat. Everything is too large for me also. I would like a Shooting Star setup with about Quart pots. So u could do a pint in each pot make 300 or so baits at a time. Maybe even have different size pot that would interchange, Say 1QT  2QT  ect. The guys that are making these machines look at it this way there are more people shooting 200 to 300 baits than those that are shooting 2000 to 3000 at a time. Fix quick connect pots so if u got bigger just adjust pots with a larger pot setup.Cub48

Ultra Molds small shooting star has twin 2qt pots, their large version has twin 2.5 gallon pots.

Cast iron certainly has thick walls and distributes heat rather well.

I've retrofitted my bears shooting star system with pid controllers. We mounted the thermocouple directly in the bottom center of the pot. The temp control is much better than the factory presto pot controllers.

Thats how I have done them as well, I put the Thermocouple in the plastic itself tho.

Hi every one, I really love the presto pot, is very cheap compared to a kitchen canister with a band clamp heater. I mean cheap in price and energy consume.

I have two presto pots controled by 2 "my pin TA4 Pid " and a J type thermocouple.

I weld a square pice of aluminum with a 3/16 hole to the bottom side presto pot for the thermocouple, this is to get the thermocouple tip in contact with the Pot wall.

You may wire the 110 current on a direct way or make a very easy trick on the presto temp control.

You can make an special pot or machine base that allways let you fix your pot or machine in a 45 degree position for small batches or 90 degrees for large batches.

There are some little electric pots for fondeu on target or wallmart and I'm shure there is a way to control it with a PID .

I used a Fry Daddy to make a small pot. It's temperature is regulated by a snap disc to maintain a temperature of 375°F which is too hot. I purchased a fixed limit snap disc that regulates the temperature between 285° and 325°. I bought it from White-Rodgers company because that is the manufacturer of the one that came on the Fry Daddy. You probably could get one cheaper on eBay.

Probably not what you are looking for, but I have had nice success with induction plates that you see advertised on tv. You can control the temp via keypad and it stays within +/- 5 degrees. They came with non-stick induction pots and pans for a few buck more. Works great for melting anything from chocolate without the double boiler and plastics for baits. My 10 yr old daughter melts crayons into coconut oil and vaseline to make lipsticks.

 

It works, and the PID is built in.

 

On a side note, I do PID controls as part of my job for large gas fired burners and heaters, as well as PID control for driers and coolers on a large industrial scale. If anyone has any questions or needs to understand how this works, let me know. IF I don't have an answer, I have resources that do.

I have now completed my Soft Plastic delivery system in 3 styles all concepts and drawings at this point. Thanks for all the help. I'm trying to assemble a working system with parts bait makers have and stuff that can be purchased to keep the cost down. I believe I have a solid idea now.

 

The only thing that Im not sure of yet, and I will start another post also, is Does Plastisol, when heated to the proper temperature, pour into a aluminum mold (not injected) right down the center of the hole and fill the cavity to make a bait correctly ? This is one of my 3 designs if it works.
