Adding Flake To Powder

Recommended Posts

I really haven't found that I can add to much. I put about 5 large spoon fulls in my candy powders and add more occasionally. Dipping the jig is more important. I dip straight down, miv the jig side to side, then pull straight up. Once it's out of the powder I keep it straight and tap the hook above the collar a couple times.

X2 with Andy - Adding clear will help keep the glitter from clumping up.  If after you dip it's got a rough feel too it add some clear.  As Cadman would say practice, practice, practice!!!

Also - whatever you do write down what you did!!  I mixed up a color when I first started and now I can't remember how to make it again.

I use clear powder and try mix in 2oz batches as I bought plastic jars to do custom colors as well as glitter colors. In a 2oz batch I find 1.25oz of color, then 1/2oz of clear and two table spoons of small fine glitter will give a nice amount for a holographic type finish in which it doesn't stand out much but reflects light very well. To get a higher density cut back on color and add more glitter, and like Fatman said, if you get it that you have a rough finish just add more clear powder but write down every thing you do so you can replicate it. BTW, I'm sure if you ask nice Fatman will share his wealth of knowledge on making custom glitter colors. He showed me how to do it but my custom glitter colors don't come close to his, he truly is a master at blending color, clear ,and glitter to make some really nice finishes.

so FatMan is this true? you are a Jedi master on making custom glitter colors, and blending colors. I would find a lesson or 2  invaluable! I would even give up some lead for that.

i want to add large gold flake to prismatic glowing yellow. any recommendations on amount of flake to color and if I need to add clear as well?

I've found that small flake, like .15, will work fine when added to powder, but, for .35 and up, I add it to clear nail polish and use that to coat my jig heads.  I use less flake, and can control where it goes and how much.

I'm okay at it - I've learned a bunch from others and I'm still learning.  I'll try and help that's payback for all I've learned.

Fair warning!!  I figured I was just going to get a bunch of colors and be happy with that - well..... it becomes a craft of it's own!! LOL

Man, that is impressive/intimidating!  Funny how we all get hooked on different things.
