Hooklineandsinker
I have always painted through fabric mesh to get a scale pattern. Lately, I have noticed scale patterns that seem to be painted through some sort of mesh that has a very irregular pattern. Any idea what this mesh is and where it is available? Hooklineandsinker
Bath scrunchies and wedding veil is what I have always used too. This is a very irregular pattern with different size openings. Hard to describe. I have a picture, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to add it to my text
mark poulson
If you put avocado bag netting over regular tulle netting, you get a 3D effect. Here's a bait I made a long time ago using that technique: http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/gallery/image/4216-black-crappie-repaint/ Edited November 22, 2016 by mark poulson
Hooklineandsinker
Cool look. Still not the look of this mesh. It's almost like taking chewing gum and stretching it and holes ripping open along the way.
RayburnGuy
Check online at fabric suppliers. Some of them have a wide variety of different types of mesh. I've lost a bunch of bookmarks on my computer or I'd give you the link to some. Ben

Hooklineandsinker
The "Spider Mesh" worked great. Bought it at Joanne Fabrics. Sprayed Elmers Adhesive to adhere
gone2long
May I ask why you used spray adhesive never heard of that before?
RayburnGuy
If you spray the mesh with adhesive it assures you of a good seal between it and the bait. The paint won't bleed under the mesh and mess up the scale pattern. Believe it was either Gene or Nathan that first told me about that trick. SW Lures
That's a good one Ben. I have had a mesh move on me because I didn't have it tight enough and secure. That's one of the worst things to happen IMO. I'm real peculiar about it now. Do you let the adhesive set up a little? I'll give it a try soon. RayburnGuy
That's a trick that I think Gene told me about. It was either him or Nate. With my memory being what it is these days it's a wonder I could get it narrowed down to just two members. Anyway, I can't take credit for it. I use the low tac spray adhesive and don't worry about giving it time to set up. It's sticky as all get out right out of the can and you won't have any trouble with the mesh moving around. And don't worry about any residue being left on the bait. You can paint right over it and you can't see a thing. Ben

Ben I recently experimented using adhesive spray on a piece of bath scrunchy mesh.I made an interesting discovery for an irregular pattern..... I was able to compress the mesh near the bait tail and expand it near the head of the bait for a realistic scale look. The adhesive holds the mesh any where you put it.
