What am I doing wrong?

Recommended Posts

I just never have been impressed with it when compared to it wood counterparts. Especially if comparing shallow cranks.   I also toyed around with some medium divers I fished bouncing off objects and the wood had a lead in regards to catches.  Not huge amount of difference but enough to take note.  May be differences do to me when I made them and the wood baits.  I thought the same with most of my foamies I made.   They caught fish and I still use some of them but just something just a little off (also foamies never felt like I was making anything just stamping widgets).   I am sure others have different results.  I only kept a log for that one year and only just under a 125 outings.

Definitely try PVC it may be what you are looking for.  I have some in my shop most of the time just doesn't get as much use.

PVC trim board has advantages and disadvantages, IMO.  Good:  it is fairly uniform in density and is naturally waterproof.  It is durable and does not require any special build procedures, like balsa can.   Bad:  wood offers different species which have different densities that may be better suited for specific bait types.  Also, some guys would rather deal with wood sawdust than PVC sawdust, which is  electrically charged and sticks to everything when sanded.

You can make crankbaits from lots of different materials and most of us eventually settle on basic materials that suit our bait designs, work habits, available tools, and various prejudices we pick up over the years.  There's no perfect answer.  You just have to explore for yourself and decide which materials make the best crankbait for you.

Deleted the cuss word now you guys have no reason to not contribute :]

I can only speak for myself Hoffbossn, but that's not what makes we decide to contribute to a question. If I have anything that will add to the thread that has not already been covered then I will do so. We are here to help each other. I only posted what I did for the reasons stated in the post.

I did the same as Ben. Not having a comment was not because of searching or a question. BobP and Jigginpig had answered the questions very well in my opinion. This group in TU seems to try to keep away from profanity. It keeps the site a step above or classy. We heavily debate and don't like comments, but I never seen any out of the way language. Maybe I haven't been around long enough. :)

My grand looks at the gallery and reads at times. As Ben stated this can be a family type site.

I'll promise you this, if I have something that might help you I'll will differently tell you.

Anyways all's good stay classy.....keep asking questions don't stop!

I figure most of us are far from what anyone would consider classy.

Lathes are always fun to have around.  I don't turn many lures as simply don't fish those styles too often (figure mainly topwaters).  I loose top waters very rarely and don't fish devil horse, gilmore jumpers, etc.. styles all that often.    In regards to lathes bigger swing also a plus (if you plan on turning bowls, platters, etc...) and more horse power the better.  Variable speed nice thing to have but not essential, less so if only turning lures.

Well I went at cutting some v joints with the plastic (miter) box? On one of my 8" muskie basswood blanks and the cuts look not too bad after being sanded tediously for a hour but still not perf exact. I have a saw but have been cutting by hand obvs with the box. The box is plastic so I think it bends a little? Anywyas Id love for some more ideas on how to cut this nicely

Ben

Sorry just messing with you. Obviously no one has any actual obligation to help me.

Mr. Ben, I am habitually, chronically, unendingly irreverent. If I ever say something that makes no sense or you are not sure about, assume two things;

1) I am being a smart ass, and

2) I am doing so in a good-natured way.

If I am ever upset about something, I tend to either not comment on it, or address it in a way that is unambiguous. I have been participating in boards long enough to have learned that even though it can be hard to communicate with folks online, people who operate in good faith will usually be able to get along.

Cheers all.
