Most of my favorites are taxidermy paints.  I like that you can shoot it without thinning.  I've used various brands including Polytranspar.  Their Superhide White is the best color undercoat white paint I've found.

+ 2 on the Superhide White!  Good Stuff!

Bob and Clemmy, have you guys used the auto air base black and white by Createx. Just wondered how they might compare to the poly superhide?

Haven't tried the Autoair.  Several companies including Polytrasnpar make a "cover white" paint that has increased pigment to hide whatever it is painted over.  The Super Hide White is one.  I like it because it covers quickly and dries very quickly with a hair dryer to a hard slick surface.  I think it has some kind of additive to promote its performance features.

Thank you, Bob. I'm pretty new to airbrushing and in the process of finding a good base coat that doesn't take multiple coats. I have the auto air base white and black in my shop and haven't tried them yet. Hoping they're as advertised. If not, the polytranspar superhide might be what I'm looking for. Thanks.

As far as number of coats, it depends on how truly solid you want the base coat to look before adding colors.  Even with Superhide, I always use more than one coat, giving the basecoat a hard look under strong light to ensure a pure white base.  That's undoubtedly overkill considering the multiple shots of color the lure will end up with, but I mostly paint wood and it's harder to cover wood grain than it is to basecoat a plastic lure.

Apdriver, are you talking about the Auto Borne sealer white?  I've been using it with mixed results.  I first started spraying it out of my Iwata Eclipse and while it covered very well, it was coming out rough with a lot of particulate matter.  I was thinning it around 25% with 4012 High Performance reducer, but I couldn't figure out why I was getting such poor results.  I stopped using it for awhile and went back to using Wicked Opaque White.

A few months back, I decided to give it another try using my old Paache H model with the H5 nozzle and the results were night and day different.  It applied perfectly and seems to adhere much better, especially on lead, than the Wicked opaque white.  I apply two coats.  In the near future, I will be using it as a base coat for a Schwinn Pixie kids bike I'll be painting with Auto Air Sparklescent Pornstar Pink II.  (I'm sure that color will make onto some baits this winter too!)

I use reduced Auto Air Sealer White on my homemade wood baits with an Eclipse HP CS, and also have experienced trouble with particulate spatter. I now stretch a doubled up piece of nylon hosiery over the bottle top as a filter and it makes all the difference in the world.

Thanks, I'll have to give that a shot next time.

David that's what I purchased in white and black to use as a basecoat. I tried the black last night reduced with the 4012 and got some splatter, also. After I noticed it, I kept my nozzle clean with a Qtip and turned my pressure up and got better results. The coverage was much better than the Createx opaque though. I may have to raid the wife's stocking drawer if I have any more trouble with the splatter. Thanks for the info.
