Compatible hooks for Do-It SH9-4-1234 Shad mold

Recommended Posts

I will be purchasing a  SH9-4-1234 Style 9 Shad Head mold from Barlows.  The only listed hook for this mold is the 4/0 635 Eagle Claw.  I'm wondering if there are any other jig hooks will work in this mold.

I've never used the 635s.   I prefer Owners, so I'm hoping maybe the 5319 will work.

Appreciate the info!

David

The 5319 Owner is too heavy, the Gamakatsu 2894 will work but Eagle Claw has a new 635 that is a good hook. Barlows Tackle is the only place I found them but it is the 635BP which is the new black platinum series, these are not the old cheap bronze Eagle Claw hooks. If you want to know for sure which hooks will fit, call or email Barlows tackle,  and despite the 5319 being to heavy, you can easily modify the mold because it is just a little bit too heavy, put the hook in the mold and close it and strike it with a dead blow hammer or close it in a vise using wood blocks on each side to protect the mold. That will mark the mold enough to show you how much material to remove. Before you do that though, email Barlows and ask if the 5319 will fit.

Or you can wait for me to notice this thread and reply.  Sometimes I am paying attention but not often.
Before I go on you need to know that the mold call for a 4/0 hook and the 5319 does not come in a 4/0 so I used the 5/0 when checking to see if it fit.

The 5319 5/0 will not fit into this mold.  The mold will require some very, very minor modification for this hook to work.  You can see the 5/0 5319 hook sitting in the mold in the picture below.

I was hoping you would see this and am sure glad you did.  I'm pretty new to making jigs and having a knowledgeable vendor provide this type of info and service is so valuable to a noob,

I'm gonna search the site for info on modifying a mold as I know I have seen them previously.  Y'all make it sound easy, but it makes me nervous.

Thanks everyone!

(I love TU)
