SW Lures
Nathan help me to get started using KBS Diamond Clear Coat. He dips his cranks but I want to start spraying KBS. I have a HVLP mini spray gun with a 1.2 needle, gravity with a 2oz cup. The gun can be cut down on the amount being sprayed. What I need to know if anybody sprays it, how much in % do you thin it and any tips you can give. Like how many baits per a given amount of KBS. Also I would like to know of anybody using the aerosol type and what you think of it. Thanks, Dale
slayer_21420
I'm looking at the aerosol type too, haven't used it yet though.
SW Lures
The dipping technique leaves a lot wasted to me. But spraying maybe as bad tho. Don't get me wrong I like it. Dale
AZ Fisher
I used KBS for the first time the other day and dipped my baits. I had not dipped before and had runs and drips. I tried to keep up by dabbing up the drips but hard to keep up with dipping 8 jointed rats all at once. I learned a bunch what not to do, but while doing this but can't think how much easier and cost effective it would be to spray them. Since I saw Dales origional post I've been waiting to hear how and if this is possible. Instuctions on the can say it can be sprayed but saw a post where someone said it could not be shot thru a brush. Maybe it's worth the cost of a cheap Harbor Freight spray gun and give it a try. I don't see spraying beening nearly as wastful as dipping and much easier to control coverage. I used a aprox 4ozs of KBS to dip 8, 5 inch rats(3 dips ea). I think I would of used half of that using D2T. On the flip side, dipping was quicker than brushing and Holy Crap what a beautiful finish. I can actually push with my thumb against a cleared wood rat and I can feel the flex of the clear as I'm pushing against it. Hope it takes a beating on the water.
SW Lures
Remember you have curing time. It is pretty hard once cured.
AZ Fisher
Dipped on thursday AM, I think they should be cured by now. I noticed also today while tuning a couple of the baits, I was able to turn the joint eye screws a little to straighten and the clear flexed as I turned them. When I have used D2T or Etex the clear around the eye screw would break or crack when the bait was tuned. I'm new to MCU.
21xdc
It takes weeks to fully cure/harden....

mark poulson
So no solvent will remove it once it dries! When I try it, I'll definitely be dipping it, for sure!
SW Lures
I'll just keep dipping. I read that and figured on getting what I needed for safety. Just seems to be to much of a hassle. Thanks anyways! Dale
mark poulson
From my experience dipping in AC1315, a concrete sealer with fumes, you still need to either dip outside and let the bait hang until it stops dripping, or use a proper respirator and a fan blowing the fumes away from you. You don't want to be inhaling fumes, or even letting them be absorbed by your eyes.
dpalinsk
I bought and used the KBS aerosol on a couple larger top water plugs (7-9) inches.i used KBS for both the seal coat and the top coat. I ran into a couple of minor issues with air bubbles and I learned to not spray too heavy and it worked great. Super clear and has more of manufactures topcoat look and feel. I normally use D2T or Solarez. Haven't been field tested yet so not sure how well KBS will hold up. I'm a little worried that those Owner 4/0 hooks beat the sides to death. It's pretty toxic so I sprayed outside because I don't have appropriate ventilation in my garage. I'll post some picks up in a few. SW Lures
Very nice looking baits there. Yeah hook rash is always a concern. I have always found that when using aerosols you should think in light multiple layers. Does the KBS aerosol have that glass look. Sometimes pictures don't show that look. I think I see it but I'm not sure. Thanks for your post, Dale Edited January 24, 2017 by DaleSW Typo

So will turning the belly hook hanger cross ways, so the treble hook straddles the belly of the bait.
Apdriver
I bought a couple cans of the aerosol and used it on a project not related to baits. I really like the non aerosol. The aerosol went on well but be sure and shake it. I picked up my can real quick on my second coat and didn't shake it and I could tell where that stroke was. I agree thin coats will be best and the can instructions say this. I also agree it's pretty toxic. I sprayed at my workbench with good ventilation but will spray outside when I use it again. Lastly, and I should have known this, it's not dishwasher safe. Uugghh! I'll have to sand and start over.

SW Lures
I posted this last night but some how it didn't post. Very true Mark on the cross hangers. Never tried nail polish in that area. Dale
