Les Young
Can you pour something like white alumilite casting resin in lead head molds? I'm wanting to make resin heads for Alabama rigs & wondered about this in the do it Alabama head mold. Is there another mold recommended to do this ? If not how would you do it? Thanks Edited January 25, 2017 by Les Young
Apdriver
Les, for strength, I believe the resin heads must be larger than lead. I don't think the lead molds will be suitable for resin.
Les Young
Do they make a mold for the resin heads? How would a person go about making one? I plan on using jigheads for weight anyway? Edited January 25, 2017 by Les Young
Apdriver
Here's a thread that might get you started over in the hard bait section. Might want to post your question there too.
Les Young
Think I'll mold some silicone around an actual bait & go from there.

Certainly there are some Arig heads cast with resin, they usually are two maybe three times the size of the comparable lead cast bait. I presumed it was for weight and strength. I chose to work with lead because I already had the tools for that and didn't have to learn another medium.
mark poulson
Could you mold a head from plumber's epoxy putty?
Les Young
Mark, I'' thinking either plumbers putty or silicone from alumilite then pour resin in it. I'll mold it around the head then when ready pour it full.
NewGen
I have made several resin masters from different "lead molds". Things I learned is make sure you use a waxy release agent like Smooth On's ease Release 2831, lay down a layer of clay or I use play dough to seal any gaps on the " flat" surface - keeps the resin from dribbling out all over the place and making a ton of flash. I use clamps to hold everything tight. I make heads out of resin for tuna, musky and stripers with no failures. There's other resins than the toy stuff from alumilite.
NCSUBVET
You can pour resin in a lead mold but you need to wax the mold very well or use a release agent. You also need a sealer because the resin will find its way through the cracks before it sets up. I prefer clear silicone to seal escape routes. You will also encounter mold marks on the finish that are difficult to clear. You can flame polish those or buff with a dremel.
