jonister
In another post I had talked about my KBS starting to go off. It was bad, but not this bad. I put it in a heat box to try to help. I think it only sped the process. Any tips? Recommendations? Maybe I'll try AC1315 again. Who knows.. Nathan
Did you try thinning it with Xylene
21xdc
Heat? You did wrong buddy! Xylol/Xylene is what you should have done.... I think it's a gonner now.
mark poulson
Generally speaking, finishes with solvents shouldn't be heated, because it only speeds up the off gassing of the solvent, which makes it set up faster. I've kept a dip jar of AC1315 for several years now in a cool garage, and it's still good. I do heat Solarez and the separate parts of two part epoxies to get them to flow better when they're cold, but I don't heat the epoxy once it's mixed because that speeds up the setting process, too. I haven't tried KBS yet, but I've heard nothing but good stuff about it. Maybe you had an air leak in the jar seal that caused it to go off like that. jonister
I had thinned it with zylene. A couple times. I didn't stick it in the heat box until it really started to go off. It got to the point of having to take off the 1/2" layer of stuff on top that had gone off. I might get another can. Well see. I guess I had it for around 8 months. It was awesome until it started to go off. Maybe I shouldn't be letting the drips go back in the can? I started to get little shards of thick stuff too. 21xdc
No drips back into the jar, Open jar for as little as possible and the least amount of times... 10 baits, Do them all at once instead of 1 each day for 10 days. Your jar seal may have not been good.... But 8 months aint too bad to me... Maybe you need to tap the can and brush it on...
SW Lures
I'm brushing, I turn it a little for leveling. Being new to the clear, I maybe over doing it with turning a little...... but it can't hurt. Dale
jonister
I might get another can. I will have to think about it. I might try leaving it in its original container as well.
jigginpig
How are the fumes with this stuff?
jonister
Pretty bad but I either do it outside, or do it under the paint booth, both with a chemical respirator on. It clears out pretty quick in the garage
jigginpig
10-4. I'll wait till I get a shop.
bobv
Need to handle this the same as DN.....I has some go bad on me. I was able to thin back out with xylene a couple times but it will still go bad once it starts. Do Not dip and let it drip back into the can!! jonister
This time around I decided to order more art resin and am going to try Solarez gloss. The thing I like about both is they should last me a while and are less toxic. I'll see how this goes.
mark poulson
The Solarez does have some solvent odor. It is nowhere near as strong as AC1315, or any of the other solvent clear coats, but it is there. I use a fan at my back when I'm dipping, but only at low speed. stumpjumper16
What is the average shelf life of Kbs?
jonister
Mark the last can I had did smell, but it smelled more like fiberglass to me. Like you say, not nearly as bad as AC1315. Stumpjumper, I got mine to last something like 8 months. I know if I did a lot more lures I would have got through that and it would have been more justifiable. 21xdc
If you never open the can, It will last almost forever. If you open the can every day, You might get a few months... Shelf life is relative. Having a good seal on the container is key as well. I use a mason jar with a clean lip. If I feel it is not sealing good, I pour into a new mason jar. I have used many different clears and KBS is the best I have used and really have no reason to try anything else.
stumpjumper16
Good stuff to know. I have been looking for an alternative to E-Tex. I have mainly looked at dick nite and Kbs. Have any of you guys used both products? Any cons with dick nite?
jonister
If you don't like the E-tex because of getting bad topcoats, try Art resin. I have yet to really screw it up with it. *knock on wood. I think Dick Nite is thinner than KBS. I've heard it has a much shorter shelf life.
