Jig Man
I used some STP Son of a Gun tire care on my camper tires. It looked real good so I put it on the car, truck, and boat. The tires on the camper turned a dirty brown. I called STP and they suggested their cleaner "Tough Stuff" and "guaranteed" that it would do the trick. Five scrubbings later it hadn't done anything. I have also tried Wesley's Bleach White. It did a little good. Can anyone recommend a cleaner to me??? The car tires are turning brown now. BTW: STP's response was to send me a free coupon for some more Tough Stuff ($2.64 less tax).
Mr B
Hey Jig Man, Is it the white wall that you are having trouble with? If so, my dad taught me this trick a long time ago. It really works good. Get some of the SOS pads that come with the soap already on them. Dip em in some water and thesr things clean white walls like nobodys business. They do not tear up the tires because you are not really pushing hard. Just a lite pass is all it takes. I have used the Bleach White also and this works much better. They are cheap and one small pad will do all 4 tires. I think there are like 10 pads in each box. Give it a try Mr B
basskat
I work in a tire plant! We use ThunderBlast or Mean Green from Wal-Mart. You can see the brown funk disappear. Give it a try.
woodsac
After you clean the tire, apply a 'tire shine'. Formual-One makes a great product! There are others like Black Magic too. It will actually make the tire a shiny black. In most cases, you don't do any follow up. Clean the tire, apply tire shine, and let dry. basskat
Just in case anyone is interested, the brown funk is not really road grime. (well some of it is )Natural and synthetic rubber both break down from ultra-viloet rays. We add chemicals to the tire that produces this "bloom". It protects the tire. When we prepare tires for dealer's showroom, we shine the tire with one of two things, silicone or Armor All. Armor All is a silicone based product. This covers the "bloom" better than any of the aftermarket products sold for tires. More important than looks please check the inflation pressure. I study tires every day for a living. The plant I work at produces 45,000 tires a day, 360 days a year. We run these things for endurance, with high pressure, low pressure, flat, you name it we try it. The number 1 failure is low inflation.
Jig Man
I am very conscious of tire pressure. I run 70+ in the camper and truck and 50 in the boat trailer tires. I have looked all over town for Thunderblast and Mean Green. I have only found Simple Green. I tried it and got little results. There is a town of 150,000 a few miles away. I am going there to Bass Pro this pm and will look for the two products which you have recommended. Thanks.
