Jig Man
Modified the mold to take 45 ga wire for weed guard. Now I am getting flash around the hook eyes. Would making the channel for the weed guard deeper solve this problem. If not then what?
kmsnowman
I want to do that as well I hope there is an answer to help to stop the flashing. I use the Lite wire owners on this mold so I have more hook choices. How did you modifie for the weed guards?
Jig Man
I took strands of 22 ga galvanized wire. Spinner bait wire or stainless will work better depending on what size wire you are going to use for weed guard. I am using 45# vinyl coated. One cavity at a time and taped the wire where I wanted the crease. Then I tightened the mold down as hard as I could in my shop vice. I used a new wire for each cavity as the wire would get flat sides after the clamping. If a bigger space is what I need, I'll go back with 20 ga wire or take a triangular file from my file set and give it a few light strokes. I find the wire keepers to be a waste of time as the elaztec products won't go on them so I'm thinking about taping them off or filling them up with J B Weld. Apdriver
Hmm. That's strange. I've found that if you don't enlarge the opening from the cavity to the eye of the hook, it won't flash. You have to use the right hook though. Nice job on the mod, by the way.
Jig Man
I have just been using some Eagle Claw 570 hooks that I have had on hand for over 20 years. It is one of the hooks listed on the Barlow's site where I bought the mold. Edited April 21, 2017 by Jig Man
21xdc
Anytime I use a lighter gauge wire hook and get flash in the eye, I take plumbers putty and put it into the mold cavity... It don't take much. Press it in tight. It will block the lead from going into the cavity. The hook eye presses into the putty for perfect pours. Your welcome.
Jig Man
I had thought maybe modeling clay might work but I don't have any. Plumbers putty will be as easy to get as clay. Thanks.
Jig Man
21xdc you are the man. I haven't gotten any plumbers putty yet but did find some stuff that I use with my A rig molding. I put it in the eyelet of the hook and made a dozen flawless jigs. Thanks
21xdc
I don't put it in the hook eye, But in the mold eye cavities. Edited April 23, 2017 by 21xdc
