Lucky777
How do people (big production guys and small production guys) do 3 colored baits? I'm trying to figure out the best way to inject a mold with 3 colors like for an example, chicken on a chain with a chartreuse tail? I have seen a way one guy on you tube does it (injects chartreuse in the mold, lets it cool, opens the mold and he cuts the part(s) out you don't want to be chartreuse, closes the mold and then re-injects his two colors using a dual injector. This method seems to waste A LOT of soft plastic and seems like it would take a lot of time doing. I know you can re-heat soft plastic but if you are trying to put out a high volume this kills the production time. I am just curious at this moment. I am not trying to produce a mass quantity right now. I am just trying to figure a few things out before I get to that point, if I get to that point. Thanks in advance for your replies and knowledge and my apologies if I was vague in any part of my question.
AZ Fisher
Search "Laminates"
Lucky777
I've looked at laminates but can only find the two colored laminate and even then it still has a lot of "wasted" plastic. I have two parts to my lure I want to be chartreuse with the rest of the bait chicken on a chain.
Baitjunkys
very few big production company's do 3 colored lams. But they do do them, It takes some fancy equipment to do them, Hand pour guys are doing them in layers, or with 3 color injectors.
DaBehr
Basstackle has a 3 color.... I haven't been brave enough to order one! When possible, I hand pour one color then use the 2 color injector to get 3. I only do it to "show off"....bass don't seem to give a darn! DaveMc1
The way the big manufacturers are making baits with chartreuse tails is with large automated slide bar molds. They block the tail of the cavity off and shoot it (chartreuse in this instance) and open it then shoot the body colour(s) all in one motion. Even in a production setting there is the extra runner so there is added waste. Leonard over at Baitjunkys is producing real slide bar molds for the hand pour guys as well, but be aware they are not cheap as they are made with 1" bar stock instead of the normal 1/2" - 5/8" bar and there is the added machine work for the slide bars.
Lucky777
Awesome! This was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Dave! Do you think that something like this would be DIY possible with VAC-50 and an Aluminum bar? Edited May 9, 2017 by Lucky777
DaveMc1
No, you would need to machine the aluminum bar and the tolerances need to be WAY too tight for it to work.

Dave, why is there a second slide bar at the tail sprue end? Is that so it can be shot as a normal, one color lure too?

On a machine the bar at the rear gate is manually operated and the one through the body is automated.
