14_yr_old_bass_pro
What do you guys think? It's a 7 footer rated 12-30, sounds like it has the right specs for a flipping rod without the extra 6 inches. Is that gonna hinder me in any way? Could a handle extension fix that if it does? The only reason I ask is because i can get one brand new for about half price. Thanks for any replies. Jake
Mattman
I'd consider that blank the begining of the Flippin' class. I think it'll flip just fine for you even though it is on the lighter end of what most flippin' sticks are. Extension handles are not afterthought parts. You're not going to be able to get one. With factory extension handle rods, the handle is built on a large diameter section of rod blank and the remainder of the rod slides inside the handle section. When extended, the blank overlaps the handle section by about 8" with matching inside/outside tapers. And with a twist they collapse 6" or more. The only reason for extension handles is because the rod lockers on most boats did't go past 7'. Many do now. Extensions add a significant amount of weight to a rod, and if your rod locker can handle 7'6" rods, I always suggest getting a single piece rod. You can flip with a 7 footer. You can flip with a 6 footer. They just don't flip as well as a 7'6" or an 8'. Rod length is a key for flippin' Sounds like a good deal on the rod. I'd get it. If you don't like it for flippin' I'm sure you can find another use for it.
