smbjohn
I have purchased the Do-it Diner Shiner mold. I would like to use the Mustad Ultra Point hooks but the length of wire from the eye to the bend is to tall to fit in the mold. How can I modify the mold to make this happen? I considered a dremel bit but can't find one small enough to elongate the circle for the eyes in the smaller sizes. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. whitaker201
You could use a drill bit the size of the hook eye to open up the mold a little. Just load the bit into a drill press and drill straight down into the mold so the hook you want to use fits. You can also use a deburring tool in your dremel. They have some very small sizes. I have found them at hardware stores like Lowes, Home Depot.....etc.

If you have an end mill, that works even better, because it is designed to cut sideways. With the drill press off, lower the bit into the mold until it bottoms out at the depth you want, and make your stop at that height, so the bit will stay down at that depth. Then, turn on the drill press, and, using two hands for control, slowly slide the mold into the bit, allowing it to cut at it's own pace. You can't force feed it, or you'll break your bit. Patience pays off, and you will be able to remove whatever you want to remove without messing up your mold. I did this to allow me to put heavier gauge hooks in some of my Do-It football and arky/sparky molds.
