Brick Steel
Does anyone know where to get Boy Howdy lure blanks? I love the bait, but the factory finish doesn’t hold up on some colors. In my first efforts at lure painting, I sanded some down and repainted them. They came out great and worked catching three nice bass on a tough day. The sanding down is a pain. Anglinarcher
High Brick, good to have new people online. Now, the short answer is that at the top of this forum there is a list of of the hard bait makers that we know of. It is called the crankbait blank suppliers, but they have all types of hard bait unpainted blanks. http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/topic/34165-crankbait-blank-suppliers/ I checked a couple of the ones that I thought might have it and came up short, so, you can check the entire list for now, or you can make your own. The options I know of would be out of wood, so I will give a suggested link for some of the materials that might work. http://www.lurepartsonline.com/Online-Store/Basswood-Bodies/Wood-Surface-Lures.html http://www.lurepartsonline.com/Online-Store/Propellers/Pointed-Propellers.html http://www.lurepartsonline.com/Online-Store/Screw-Eyes/Stainless-Screw-Eyes.html I am pretty sure the Boy Howdy is plastic, but the original versions similar to it were wood and they worked very well. Now that the ice is broken, perhaps some others can chime in and fill in the gaps I left.
Brick Steel
Thanks, Anglinarcher. I did find one similar to the Boy Howdy at Shelt Fishing Tackle. It is Listed as 'Shelt's new quality tractors with 2 props.' The only thing is that the length of the body is given as 90mm (or about 3.5 inches). A Boy Howdy or a similar Rapala X-Rap Prop is 4.5 to 5 inches long. I've emailed Shelt's to see if it is an error or if they are planning to do a larger bait. A 3.5 inch prop bait seems kind of wimpy to me.
