Blade bait inserts and painting

Recommended Posts

Picked up a blade bait mold after having great results on them last fall. Im getting ready to order inserts and was wondering if a person paints them if they can just use the brass inserts instead of the chrome as they are a little cheaper?  Or are there benefits to the solid chrome? Also, can anyone suggest a powder paint airbrush. I read that the airbrush is the best method for painting blades.  Thanks

I use brass inserts if I'm going to paint them. Before I pour the blade baits, I take the brass blades and lightly sand both side to give the powder paint some bite. After pouring, but before painting, I wipe the blades down with denatured alcohol. Then I paint the heads and body. I use the brush tap method. I get excellent results, where I can multi-color the head and also multi-color the body.

Why would you pay for chrome plating if you're going to cover it up?

I agree.  I prefer chrome at times, but the lead gets painted, but never the chrome.  I use brass most of the time.
