Vodkaman
Crashed my bicycle a few days ago, and smashed my hip joint pretty bad. It just highlights the importance of a quality hard top coat. Alas, this soft bait goes under the saw tomorrow for a hip replacement - wish me luck Dave
Travis
Sorry to hear the bad news Dave. Hope you respond well and get to healing quickly. Keep up with the physical therapy and you should come out almost as good as new. I am sure it won't slow you down too much. Good thing about having a lot of hobbies and interests. Take care.
Vodkaman
Thanks Travis. Yes, having hobbies will certainly help me back with some incentive. The op went well and I start physio today. https://web.facebook.com/REALfarmacyCOM/videos/1744580008958381/
alsworms
Hey Dave, Sorry to hear about this. I understand hip replacements have come a long way. Hope that's the case with you. Here's to a quick recovery!
Vodkaman
Surgeon had a terrific man-cave, all kinds of fancy tools. I could hear the 'whirring' of rotary tools while I was waiting for my turn. It was kind of exciting
swimb8s
Speedy recovery , ' whirring ' , exciting !!
Vodkaman
I am home now after 16 days in hospital. Lots of pain, but this is only a temporary thing (I hope). I am getting quite good with the Zimmer frame. I was hoping to get back to fishing within a week or two, but sitting for more than 20 minutes is proving to be very painful, and sets my progress back. However, fishing cannot resume until I can get my leg over the motorbike taxi (ojek). I tried a couple of days ago, close but no cigar. Will try in another week or two. The fishing ponds (galatama) are possible, with level concrete banks, and plenty of fishing friends around to help me. I do feel that an 11Lb bawal might just pull me in! Vodkaman
I am now approaching 12 weeks post op and everything is going very well. I started cycling again at 6 weeks, and this has really accelerated my recovery with the non-impact exercise. I did have a setback at 8 weeks when I forgot about the hip and climbed onto the bed wrong. I strained something but I was back on track a week later. I cycled to my 2 month checkup. I thought the doc might be angry, but when he saw me walk into his consultation room in my fancy cycling duds and helmet, he had a beaming smile. At the end of the checkup he followed me out to the bicycle and took some selfies to show other patients what is possible for a 62yo after two months. I still get stiff after inactivity, but after a few steps I am walking normally. I climb stairs one at a time for safety although I probably could climb normally if I tried. I got sick and tired of old ladies sprinting passed me in the street, but I don't have to suffer that humiliation any more. I returned to fishing around week 5. This got me out of the house daily, and also contributed to my recovery. This injury is the kind of thing that you need goals to get you back into life. Fishing and cycling did it for me. clemmy
Glad to hear it Dave! I’m a Physio by trade, so I know what you’ve gone through. Cheers, Craig
Vodkaman
Craig - Physio is a noble trade. The physio was very basic, but I guess all that it needed to be at that stage. I suggested that they need a physio room with mock-ups of life situations 'hippy' and other joint survivors would have to face, videos with the best solutions to overcome the problems and specific exercises that would help. Here in Indonesia, this would be how to get on the back of a motorbike, how to climb in to the back of an angkot (public transport in the form of a minibus with low bench seats), toilet issues, and many more. Post op, the patients are basically unarmed when they hit the real world, and likely to do themselves more damage if they attempt something the wrong way.
Vodkaman
Woe! quite a bashing you took, sorry to hear about that. I am doing fine, but I don't think 100% is achievable without a lot more work on my part. I am cycling and fishing, so my life is certainly back to normal, better than I expected anyway. Now 17 weeks in, next doctors appointment in March, probably the final one. Dave
JRammit
Speaking of not being on here much lately Rough stuff Dave!... Glad to hear of a steadfast recovery... And not surprised at all to see you turning an unfortunate event into an engineering challenge...... Hopefully those physical therapists hold your advice as highly as many here do! Vodkaman
JR - nope, never heard back from them. Still, more time for fishing. New PB two days ago, 5.72Kg (12.58Lbs) bawal. I caught two over 5Kg that day. Dave
Vodkaman
Here is a vid of me fishing, capturing a 4.58Kg bawal, a shade over 10Lbs. You can see a slight limp, but I am moving just fine. I had been sitting motionless for 30 minutes. Once I get moving everything is now normal. alsworms
Nice catch, Dave, and glad to hear recovery is going well! Sadly, I can say I will be able to relate. Just had an MRI done on my back and found out I need surgery. Lumbar Stenosis, which from what I've researched, is a nice way of saying crushed vertebrae. Going in next Wednesday to found out when the glorious event will occur.
Vodkaman
Alsworms - sorry to hear of your plight. Are you going for disc replacement of fusion? Dave
alsworms
I'm hoping once the surgeon sees the MRI, he can approve of injections, but according to the spine specialist, there is not enough room to inject. He's thinking he might be able to inject over and/or under the 2 vertebrae, but that all depends on the surgeon. If that isn't an option, they will have to remove portions of those 2 vertebrae. Just playing the waiting game for now.
