Thread for ultra minnow ( spro type jigs)

Recommended Posts

Will be making ultra minnow salt water jigs from 1 oz to 5 oz. Looking for a recommendation on thread size and type. Also make rods and rod thread breaks under tension when making jigs. Will be powder coating jigs and tying on bucktail to complete the jigs.  Need a good sturdy thread. Any help will be appreciated..... Thanks Walt  (NJ)

Yeah you can use braided line but I prefer nylon because it has a little bit of stretch and seems to wind on a little better.  Either will last longer than whatever you’re tying on the jig.  And thread is cheaper and comes in more colors.  I’ve never had a bucktail jig’s thread fail and they last for years.

I use two threads, both very strong. I use Coats and Clarks upholstery thread, you can easily find it at any Walmart. Hobby lobby or online in bulk from Amazon. It real cheap and real strong. I love it

second is Kevlar thread, I've found it at Barlows, I have not tried to find it anywhere else but I'm sure you can find it online, I have it in Red and Black only. It's tough, I love this thread as well.

since you will be tying big jigs, go with the Coats and Clark it's easy to find, cheap, it's worth it to go to Walmart and pick a spool up for like under $5.00. You get a lot of yards as well, i believe 150 yards.

peace

The problem I have with braid and metallic threads is they have no stretch whatever.  When beginning a wrap, thread with a little stretch will grip the jig (or rod guide) much more securely while you get started with the wrap.  I’ve never had any of the topcoats mentioned above fail through years of fishing so thread strength is largely irrelevant to me.  I go with nylon thread and nail polish.
