JimP
This is being offered to distributors as a lure top coat. I was given a small sample to test and the results were very promising. Good gloss and coverage and thinner coats. Much thiner viscosity than we are used to with epoxy coatings. Without a doubt the hardest epoxy I have used. It's going to be marketed as "ClearShield-HD Lure & Fly Coating" A web site for the distributers is up and offers some information that users may be interested in. http://www.lurecoatings.com/index.html I have no financial interest in this product just letting you know to keep you eyes open, you might like to give it a try. The lures below are finished with "Clearshield - HD" Have fun, Jim P 1

ravenlures
How will it hold up to plastic worms and lure tubing, also skirting. Does it need the can or bottle to be taped. Looks like you can dip a lure in it, can the drips go back into the container. Wayne
azsouth
leaves many questions ( not a proven finish) but it looks good. is it sold in bottles or cans? how many ounces? durability? price?

Wayne Raven: I do not know about the compatibility with other poly materials. I did not try dipping but I think it should be doable. Excess can not be put back into the can. Its a two component material, once mixed its going to cure into a solid.

BobP
The link doesn’t give much info on what it is in terms of chemical composition except to say it contains no solvents and is a two part finish. That suggests to me that it is another epoxy finish. If not, what?
Nathan
It’s a 2 part mix so it is or similar to a epoxy type coating sounds like to me..Nathan

texasrodmaker
Hey guys, I am the developer of ClearSHield HD, the new finish Jim is referring to. I'm happy to answer any questions regarding the product, but I don't want to do so without the blessing of the owners of the board. I sent an email or two a few weeks ago about a board sponsorship, but never received a response. Looking forward to getting to know you guys, Best Regards, Andy Dear Axis Outdoor Company 2
BobP
Andy, thanks for coming to the board. I have a few questions. is CSHD an epoxy product? if so, is it mixed in equal volumes? since the op noted it has low viscosity, does it contain any solvents what is its hardening time at nominal room temp? Time to reach a no-sag status on a lure under rotation? In what volumes will it be packaged and at what retail price? Thanks, Bob 1
texasrodmaker
Bob, Please excuse my delayed reply. For some reason, the notifications on this thread were going into my junk email folder! Please see the answers to your questions below. 1. Yes, it is an amine-based epoxy system designed for use as an EXTERIOR COATING. Very important distinction because most of the epoxies I see guys using are designed as ADHESIVES. There is a huge difference in chemistry and performance properties between the two. We can get into this later if anyone has questions about it. It's not an adhesive (although it can work for that), it's not a casting resin (bar top/table top coating i.e Envirotex), it is an exterior grade epoxy "paint" for lack of a better word that contains UV inhibitors to prolong the clarity and structural integrity of the coating. 2. It is a 2:1 mix ratio that had to be designed this way in order for the viscosity and cure cycle to be what I wanted. I was adamant about supplying a resin where microbubbles were simply not an issue, and the user had maximum control over film thickness. I do supply silicon free syringes with the product to ensure accurate measuring. We do NOT recommend the use of a scale to measure epoxy and here is why. Most off the shelf systems are designed to be measured by volume, rarely ever is the weight ratio the same as the volume ratio. For example, one of the resins I sell for the custom knifemaking industry are 1:1 by volume, but 1: .92 by weight. If you don't know the weight ratio you're doing yourself way more harm than good by trying to be more accurate with a scale. I run into this all the time with folks making it much harder than it needs to be. 3. Our product is SOLVENT FREE. My formulator uses what are called "reactive diluents" that actually become part of the cured coating, rather than flashing out of the resin itself (like Acetone, DNA, Xylene etc...). Its totally solvent-free, not flammable or combustible, and can be shipped worldwide without issue. 4. At 70 degrees Fahrenheit, pot life is about 45 minutes, rotation time depends on the film thickness that you apply, but average rotation time is about 3-4 hours. A full useable cure is about 16 hours. Having said that ALL of this can be sped up with the application of mild heat. Epoxies cure through an exothermic reaction, so the more heat you add the quicker the crosslinking will occur. A heated drying box at 90 degrees will cut the cure time down by about 30-40%...Epoxies LOVE gentle heat. 5. Right now I package it in 3oz. 6oz. and 12oz. kits but we can package it in much larger sizes up to gallon if necessary. Price: 3oz---$10.00 6oz.---$15.00 12oz.---$25.00 6. One thing you didn't ask about, but that I feel compelled to address is shelf life. My resin really has no appreciable shelf life if stored at room temperature (70 degrees +/- a few degrees. I have bottles of ThreadMaster rod finish from when I still owned that company 10 years ago that work perfectly. The hardener has discolored a bit, but other than that, functionally its fine. 7. I do have a Distributor that has signed on board. The company is called Unicoi Outfitters in Georgia. www.unicoioutfitters.com 706-878-3083. I've also had a few conversations with Andrew at Anglers Workshop/Lurepartsonline, and Matt at Barlow's Tackle, so hopefully they will be picking it up soon as well. If you guys have any recommendations for further distribution channels, please let me know, or have them contact me. If you or any of the members here have further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out, as I am happy to help. eastman03
Sounds fantastic. Welcome here and thanks Andy. Hope to be able to order it from somewhere soon! Although, it is often tough to get anything into Canada without crazy shipping prices. Either way, I'd love to experiment with a different topcoat.
