Les Young
What bobbin do most use tying flies & is it an absolute necessity to have ? Thanks
blll
When you get one, you'll decide yes it was necessary. I like a ceramic tube or flared end brass bobbin. Does not have to be expensive. I tie larger flies with 210 denier thread. Finer thread may require a better bobbin.
JimP
Les: Yes they are a necessity. You will end up with several bobbins. I have some expensive bobbins with tension adjustments and ceramic tubes but I like the dirt cheap no frills the best. They all are adjustable tension just by over flexing the legs apart or together to get the tension you want. Something like this will work fine for a lifetime of tying for under $10. You can always get a couple more when you find the "got to have that" model. Most of all have fun tying. swimb8s
You will probably end up with a wide variety of bobbins as try different ones, I have a bunch with different colors and sizes of thread ready to go so I don't have to change and rethread a bobbin every time . And like Sharon Macomber said the level of satisfaction and your creativity is no limit . Have fun !!
Les Young
Uh thanks guys, but incase you hadn't noticed this post was made in 2018. I bought a pretty big fly tying kit & made a bunch of crappie & floatnfly jigs last winter. Edited December 6, 2019 by Les Young
Big Epp
Alternatively (and yes, I see this is an old thread with an even older OP), you can make your own bobbin with wire. I don't fly ties consistently, I make lures. However, there are often times when I tie up stuff much like tying a fly. I bent up a bobbin (just look on YouTube), and it works great! TerryF2858
I never used one at first, but then I tried 1 and yes you need at least 1, I think I might have 8-10, with different threads on them, i have 3 of these, they work pretty well. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fly-Tying-Thread-Bobbins-Set-of-3-Double-Flared-Tube-FF104/251924671027
Chuck Young
Bobbins are useful for many materials: thread, floss, lead wire, ss wire for dubbing brushes (otherwise is unspools and makes a mess). They give you better control, nicer wings and heads, and save a lot of broken threads.
Bentrod425
Home made or store-bought, a bobbin is a useful tool. I have a cheap one that came with my childhood fly tying kit. It isn't perfect, but works well enough for my imperfect flies and jigs.
