Hillbilly voodoo
As I increase the number of baits I make and the more detail I have added my paint stand is just not practical anymore I need options for working on multiple baits and handling lures up to 8inch 4once. Needs to be hands free I have seen the lollipop style used on small lures but worry the connection may fail on large baits. Worry about just a single gator clip holding the lure. Something like this combined with a peg board might work if it has a stable connection What kind of DIY lure holders are those making large baits using? pics would be great
AZ Fisher
I use these for larger baits, 6-10 inch, don't know if they would be available to you thru HF, I take the magnifying glass off and add another alligator clip. https://www.harborfreight.com/helping-hands-60501.html Edited February 15, 2020 by AZ Fisher 1
Hillbilly voodoo
Better then what I am using and will keep it as an option What I am hoping for is a option to work on 10 or more lures at a time without taking up too much space. Yes I am being needy lol
ravenlures
First I purchased alligator clips on ebay then some 1/8" dowels squeezed the clips on the dowels, cut some pine 2" X 6" drilled holes apart for the lure I will be painting glue the dowels in and that's it. Travis
MDF blocks have been what I have been using in the past. Always seams to have some 3/4 scrap in the shop. Several of the videos out there show similar set up so I figured no need to change.
Hillbilly voodoo
I will pick up a few clips today to test out how I like these stands Only thing I am going to modify is make one peg adjustable by not gluing it in and drill a series of peg holes in the base. Test one like this anyway
Hillbilly voodoo
It appears my overthinking has gotten the best of me with this issue. The stand I use now I made years ago is a bulky rotating stand that holds baits with springs and hooks. Nice when I am painting but takes up too much space and you have to be careful removing the lure so you don’t scratch it. These are much easier and cheaper to build. Travis
If going to do multiple style baits then drilling multiple holes the way to go. Just make a simple grid layout and no need to glue in the dowels. When not used for larger baits can just hold normal baits vertically/horizontally for use. A 1 inch layout manages to cover most needs and you can go diagonal as well if needed for some baits. Can also arrange baits in row and make a pass back and forth and highlight the belly on all the lures, back etc.. when painting comes in handy for a lot of different things if doing smaller numbers. It is good for glue up for multiple jointed baits. Alligator clip the nose then, hinge between first/second segment, stick a tooth pick in the back of second segment and hold with alligator clip and wait for glue to dry. Vodkaman
Mine is a little more complicated as you would expect, but it does work and you will only need one clamp per lure. The clamp remains on through all painting and epoxy processes, and even fixes to the drying wheel for which it was initially designed. Material is 1/2" dia aluminium bar. You can see the clamp slot cut on a band saw or hacksaw. Chamfers formed on a belt sander. The 4.2 dia hole is tapped for 5mm Allen bolt. The rear shallow chamfer pushes into a 12mm dia hole, on a block and a drying wheel. Just sand until you get the fit you want. Vodkaman
At 5 mins into this video, you will see an earlier version of this clamp in use. Dave 1
Hillbilly voodoo
Thanks everyone I think the style Wayne and Travis brought up will fit me best for a stand Dave you have just sparked an idea for modifying my lure turner.
JD_mudbug
http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/topic/33862-big-lure-holder/?tab=comments#comment-279044 My holder is sort of like Raven's holder. I use scrap wood and L brackets to make them. The eye bolt and swivel allow for manual rotation. Tighten the nut to prevent rotation. Add an eye screw on the side of the end to hang it vertically. DGagner
Probably not practical for multiple baits but I moved from the alligator clip stand to some Dr. Slick hemostats (the scissor like things that clamp) and a slotted board to stand them up in. And they lock and hold some pretty heavy stuff.
Hillbilly voodoo
Definitely not practical for my large baits because it takes two hemostates to hold them stable. I have used hemostates and a holder made of pvc pipe for small baits in the past. Still do at times I have made 3 holder similar to Travis’s pic to try out. So far they work well
Hillbilly voodoo
Actually have a set of hemostates I bought for fishing that works. The ones my wife got from the hospital don’t though it’s an option just expensive
eastman03
This would be more for a painting stand, but it is such a great idea. Also, it would work best for crankbaits. Starting at 11:30.
