Weed Gaurd Question

Recommended Posts

I was looking into making my own finesse football jigs with parts from lure parts online and found the size of the brush guards to be unclear. Are they categorized by strand count or some other factor? Also what size of a fiber jig guard should be used for a finesse jig in light cover?

The weed guards have a nomenclature and a each has a diameter.
FG-9  = 1/16”

FG-12 = 5/64”

FG-30 = 1/8”

FG40 = 5/32”

I know fishing skirts. Com has a heavy and medium with a welded hub that I really like but only have the two largest sizes. The FG-30 works well for a Bass size finesse jigs. Couple of ways to use a smaller weed guard than what the mold calls for. You can use a turned down base hole pin and glue the weedguard in. One novel solution I saw recently is a guy said he bought some round steel stock and used some Teflon tape wrapped around the stock to fit it in the mold. Teflon is high heat resistant so it works very well.

Majority of Do-It molds have a 1/8" base hole pin. This cavity takes the FG-30 weedguard like mentioned above. Now for finesse jigs I usually use 12 strands of  .018( FG-30) weedguard or you can use surflon which is a soft coated wire.  You can either use a turned down pin to get a smaller hole, or you can fill the weedguard hole in your jig with epoxy and then stick the strands in. There are a lot of ways this can be achieved.
