Out of what?

Recommended Posts

Hi, i have been looking through the pics, and i am seeing a lot of sweet baits, but i know that they are your own custom baits. But what do you guys make the first prototype out of in order to make the mold? do you make it out of clay or somthing, and how hard is it, i guess it must come with experience.

Thanks for your help

I usaully make them out of clay...

You can buy clay that when you bake it in the oven it gets hard and make your molds out of that. I never had luck with it, for me anyway. I make a bait out of oil based clay. Then pour plaster or water putty over it. Some guys use rtv, maybe thats why they use the oven clay?? I don't know!!

You can use just about anything ! Be creative, a sharpie, a shoestring, whatever B)

I like to use clay, but it's very hard to demold from a resin mold. I use Sculpey brand clay. It never dries out. The only way to harden it is to bake it in the oven. The trick for me has been to only cook it long enough to make the outside surface hard. By leaving it slightly uncooked in the middle, I am still able to dig it out of the mold pretty easily. Once the outside is cooked, you can sand it, carve it, file it, etc.

My 'Roker' bait in the gallery was done a bit different. I poured a resin base. Then I etched the mold out with a dremel. Carving depth with a dremel takes lots of patience. It was so hard to make everything even because you can't judge depth. I don't recommend doing it that way. But the dremel is great for modifying an existing bait. For example, mold a worm, then get the dremel out and make some appendages on it :?:

Some of the baits you see are 'hybrids'. The guys take 2 or more baits and 'weld' them (or pieces of them) together. Then mold the finished product. My zipper craw is 4 different baits with lots of mods to get the action I wanted. It's a time consuming hobby if you want it to be

Hey guys:

I guess I'm addicted as everything I look at becomes part of a bait in my mind. I used a toothbrush end and some marbles as part of a prototype and one of my razor handles just today.

Bassmaster had an article this last month on how one of the touring pros (Kelly Jones, Jr. I think) developed a new bait when he was fishing during a tourney. He took a senko and glued part of another senko in the middle to form a T.

Anyways, he has a bait company now www.kickerfishbait.com out of the need for a special bait during that tourney.

My wifes brush handle looked like the beginning of a cool new bait also!! Anybody got a spare room  !!!

Man you guys got my wheels turning!!

I found a straw my son was using and it has nice ripples and If i cut it down it would make a nice senko type bait!

Thats cool what the guy did in the tournament, a T huh?

I thought about a bait molded in a U shape, like a senko or something??

I have to play around with some clay!!

If you got kids you got a lot of stuff to look at for making baits. The playdoh (sp) making tools they have can make some really neat forms. I just used some Plastics Bugs the kids had, and I am going to make a Scorpion Bait and possible a Spider Bait. (Should have some pic's of these by next week.)

The Dremal Tool can be really handy, they were just advertising a new one this week that I am think of buying for use with nothing but my Resine Molds.
