Subvisser7
That’s awesome! What colors do people normally start out with?
wallyc14
Your most productive colors. Me? Green pumpkin #1 watermelon #2 black #3 white#4 chartreuse #5 . the nice thing about black and white you can brighten or darken any color you want. The other nice thing is black and white are good choices for just about any water color. Green pumpkin is the #1 selling color for bass fishing last time I looked. Good for clear to stained water . Watermelon is a good clear to lightly stain water. Watermelon blue flake is my weapon of choice when the water I fish is really clear 6-10’ of clarity. Another note on color buy a color wheel and learn how to use it. With it and some basic colors you can make any color you want.
Subvisser7
Awesome! My classes in color theory won’t go to waste. I'm thinking about getting a few colors. Black, white, red, blue, green pumpkin, and black grape. I love the look of lure work’s phthalo blue. i was also wondering. Is heat stabilizer something I should get? I’ve been watching YouTube videos and sometimes they add it and other times they don’t. Also, do you use a floating plastisol or a standard sinking? Apdriver
Probably need some heat stabilizer for multiple reheats to keep your plastic from yellowing. How about a medium plastisol, works for most things. Softener added to it if you want really soft. Salt will make it sink.
Subvisser7
What is considered a medium Plastisol? I've been looking at Dead on Plastics worm blend. I'm just not sure whether I should go with the floating or sinking, white or black respectively.
Subvisser7
Also, what type of PPE do you use? I'm looking at gloves and respirators and don't want to choose the wrong ones and end up injured or worse.
wallyc14
I use welders gloves or the rubber coated gloves. I don’t use a respirator.i have a hood vent that moves ALOT of air. I never smell the cooking plastic at all . I want to say a respirator for organic compounds will do the trick. When I first started I use one for asbestos. Never smelled it once.
Subvisser7
I've been looking at this respirator. https://www.amazon.com/Facepiece-Reusable-Respirator-Professional-Woodworking/dp/B08CCH64HQ/ref=sr_1_15_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=respirator+3M+6500&qid=1600395498&s=hi&sr=1-15-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFSUVpNUzlWVVJXRjQmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAyMzY1NDUyQ0JFRUVBQVo2QUdOJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAwOTQwNTE4VUpWREpLRDgzTjEmd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9tdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl And these gloves. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GJGS83M/ref=sspa_dk_detail_3?pd_rd_i=B07GJGS83M&pd_rd_w=fhVrW&pf_rd_p=f0355a48-7e73-489a-9590-564e12837b93&pd_rd_wg=tvNXW&pf_rd_r=SXZR2PDADXZ84ERH2CDX&pd_rd_r=a481c665-2655-449a-a2f4-3ab122e49cc0&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyT09LM1U0MzNSODYyJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMjc1Mjg3QVg0TFdGSUdVV1o4JmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA4NjA2MTExU09RSTUwMjRYWDhaJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfZGV0YWlsX3RoZW1hdGljJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=1 Would these be sufficient? I've also been reading about pyrex exploding. Is this really a thing that happens?

As far as gloves, I prefer as thin a glove as I can get away with. Reason being is wearing a heavy glove with little feel, I am more prone to dropping a Pyrex and feel That puts me at more risk than a thin glove. I like them rubberized for the best grip. exploding Pyrex- never had it happen but some have reported it. It seemed the common theme was well worn/scratched cups being put on cold surfaces after heating.
Subvisser7
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you sent that to me. that’s a good thing to hear about the Pyrex and gloves too.
Subvisser7
What size bags do you use for your baits? Do you scale up for example, 6 inch stick, do you use 6 inch bags or 7 inch bags?
Subvisser7
Anyone?
Apdriver
You need to size up so you can lay your baits straight when bagged. Or...as straight as you can.

Subvisser7
By way of plastisol. Is bait plastics or lureworks the better brand?
wallyc14
That’s a very loaded question. You’ll get lots of answers. My advice to you is to start with which ever one you like. Each one has there plus and minuses..use what works for you.Bait plastics is inexpensive and so far to me seems ok. Which might be your best choice to start. This is the way I did it when I first started. Buy cheap I would rather waste cheap plastic at 25 bucks a gallon versus something that’s 68 bucks a gallon. Subvisser7
Should I start with a 1 gallon jug or a 5 gallon bucket?
wallyc14
I would start with a gallon unless you know your going to make a lot or a lot of mistakes. I just wouldn’t recommend starting with quarts like I did . I went through a quart the first night. Lol
Jig Man
There are 16 cups in a gallon. A cup will make a lot of baits.
wallyc14
Very true. Like everything else when it’s new your going to want to play with it and experiment.i went through 2 gallons the first month filling my friends tackle boxes as well as mine. Now no so much. I make what I know I will use. I still experiment when I get a new mold, but I make stock in the winter when I can’t fish. I’ll usually make north of 1000 baits. Apdriver
I was looking through some bookmarks yesterday and ran across this. If I was a just starting out looking for cheap alternatives, I think I may give these guys a try. Has anybody shot any of their molds? Anybody have any or do business with them? I’d like to hear some personal experience. https://authentic-handmade.myshopify.com
Driftwood
Just remember, shoes,( not flip flops.) Long pants and long sleeved shirts will protect you from plastic burns. Hot plastic is very unforgiving.
