fishordie79
Hey TU Folks, I recently got into molding wooden masters for replication purposes. As often happens I was sitting at work today and my mind wandered off into the land of bait making and I thought of something I haven't asked or seen asked, that I can remember, on this site or any other. Do resin copies require sealing before paint and epoxy? Thanks to all for any valuable info you can provide! Tight lines!
Anglinarcher
Sealing? NO Base coating? normally yes to get a good paint job.
fishordie79
@Anglinarcher thanks man I was thinking that it wasn't a requirement but I honestly had built several before the thought crossed my mind so I thought I would ask. Thanks again!
bogdan_alex
I discovered that some micro-pores resulted from resin pouring can ruin my epoxy finish making my lure more prone to fish eyes, so I try to do a dip in primer witch helps me paint it better and get a better finish also. fishordie79
@bogdan_alex Thanks for the tip! What primer do you use?
bogdan_alex
If you paint with acrylics and epoxy topcoat I don't think it's all that important as long as it leaves you with a nice surface. I've used wood primers or even automotive primers with same result. If you use solvent based paints or topcoats then you should be more careful
danthefisherman
No need to seal resin, but I'd wait for full cure and prime before painting as mentioned. Washing fresh blanks off with soap and water before priming will also remove any oil or residue, promoting a better bond with the paint. fishordie79
Thanks @danthefisherman! What about using IPA to remove oil and residue? I don't have a faucet out in my shop but I do have IPA.

I don't have a faucet out in my shop but I do have IPA. Not sure what IPA is...all I'm getting for search results is "India pale ale" Resin is pretty hardy stuff so long as there are no contaminants introduced during curing. Some tin-cure silicon molds produce residual moisture and alcohol as a byproduct of the condensation process which can inhibit some resins from curing properly. I'm not a chemist or material scientist by any means, but I figure cured resin is pretty safe to use basic cleaning solutions like soap on. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can chime in. Good luck and happy building! Dan
fishordie79
@danthefisherman Sorry man...IPA = Isopropyl Alcohol. I should have been more specific. Thanks for your comments man! Much appreciated:)
