madbass
Well, I got my stik kit from Del today and made my first pour.Went ok but I've got a few questions. I'm using a stainless measuring cup and a single electric burner (wife wont let me use our microwave so I thought I'd try this before I invest in a micro).Used 1 oz. of plastic with a pinch of red, green and black glitter,no salt or softener. At around 250 deg I noticed the bottom of the cup start turning brown, but not the plastic (I was mixing the whole time). At 300 deg it started smoking quite a bit so I just went ahead and poured a couple stiks. Are you supposed to pour with the mold tipped on an angle? I got some air in the plastic near the top. The plastic did not stay clear it turned slightly yellowish-is that from the glitter? Why did some of the green glitter turn blue? What is the best way to clean the liquid and/or solid form off of everything?
Mojo
1 oz of plastic burns alot quicker than 4 oz will. If the plastic is liquid enough and smoking a little at 250 degrees, you can pour. It doesn't have to be 300 to get good results. I assume that the temps you are talking about was the setting on your hotplate? When plastic turns yellow it's burning. You need to either cook more at once or turn your heat down. How big is the measuring cup? I use a 1/2 cup pouring pan from LC. Do you have a pinched spout in the cup? This will make it easier to pour from. LCs pans have a spout on them. You can put a pinch in it using pliers if you want to. I pour my senkos with the mold upright. The trick is to pour a steady stream straight down the hole. If you pour too fast it will glob up on the chamfer hole. It takes a little practice but you'll get it pretty quick. Go ahead and mix up 4 oz or so. If you mess up a pour you can always put it back in the cup and reheat it and try it again. 1 oz will only get 3 or 4 of the 5" senkos. Start out at the lowest temp that the plastic is liquid. You can turn the heat up a little while your heating it initially, then turn it down after it goes from jelly to liquid. Start at 250, pour some worms. If it clumps up or doesn't flow real smooth turn it up to 275 and try again.
