sj_bill
I have been lurking here for a while trying to soak up all the knowledge I can. You guys are great! I have started to pour some of my own molds using Durhams Waterputty. I am having some problem with mixing the putty though. I can never seem to get all the lumps out. I am concerned one is going to end up in the cavity and cause problems. I am mixing in a paper paint pail with a large metal spoon. Any advice would be welcome! charkins
Promise not to tell my wife, but I use her blender to mix the water putty. Just try not to get much air in the mix, or you will have bubbles instead of lumps (LOL) Cal
sj_bill
Thanks Cal. Maybe I will go pickup a cheapo blender. My wife would kill me if she caught me using hers to mix Durhams!
Travis
If you are getting lumps you may be adding too much water at first. Add just a little mix until thick paste add a little more and continue until you get the consistency you want. You shouldn't get any lumps this way. At first I got lumps also until I did this. You can also use your shopvac to make a simple vacuum chamber out of a five gallon bucket or I took a piece of rubber and made a "gasket" that fits along the edges of the bread pan I pour most molds in and with a piece of Lexan with a make shift hose attachement does a fairly good job. sj_bill
Ahh I bet I am starting with to much water. I was filling my mold container with water then adding durhams to the desired consistancy. I am thinking I should go the other way. Measure Durhams to the level I want then add water? I ended up with way more than I needed last time.
charkins
Mix the water putty in a large plastic cup and then pour into pain you are using to make the mold in. That works best for me, if I am not using the blender. Go ahead and use the blender, she will never know!!! It cleans up real easy. MagicBob
From my own experience Durham's always starts out with lumps, just keep stirring and they dissolve. bob
