tukta
I am doing some lure repaint and need a chrome base, problem I'm having is after spraying chrome then go to clearcoat the chrome goes flat ruining the effect. What methods are you using to keep mirror finish on your lures
Fishin Big
What clear coat are you using? I believe that a black base coat is used for the chrome to pop.
JD_mudbug
You should check out Engineered Angler's videos on YouTube about chrome. He tests several different products and clear coats. Outside of silver plating with a duplex gun, most chrome sprays will dull some. His best spray chrome results seem to come by painting a black base coat, applying a smooth clear coat to the black (the smoother the surface the better), then he sprays the chrome spray product, followed by dipping in floor wax (Pledge Floor Care Finish) for a mid-coat before finishing the paint job and final clear. He has several videos on it. Some are listed below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Uo0fyo99G0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-JfyKYWYGg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3z_jF8EdWCA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Eb_XElOUA4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5k3WpdbJTnA
Salty's
ALL Chrome paints will dull when cleared. Why? Because a chrome paint when viewed from the side looks like a forest. A clearcoat fills in between the tree tops and it doesn't reflect as much light in the vertical spectrum. Short of a vapor deposition type finish there doesn't exist a perfect chrome finish. Real chrome excluded.

But, after trying some of the mirror paints I learned about from Engineered Angler, and using the floor wax he recommended, it worked, and worked very well. I am eating crow now, and in truth, loving it.

Anglinarcher
The original Pledge is the gold standard, but they put cleaners in it now that prevent it from working as well. The Createx intercoat or clear works well also. I am using the below stuff from Home Depot. It is white in the bottle but in about 15 minutes it is completely dry and clear. It is not a "top coat" but works very well as an intercoat. https://www.homedepot.com/p/QUICK-SHINE-64-oz-Floor-Finish-51590/203488484

Anglinarcher
I have done both, but I tend to just dip and hang. Takes less time and works for my needs.

I got my HD wax yesterday, and I painted a sample board yesterday and coated it with the wax today. It looks much better than anything else I've tried, so I repainted an older bait with Rustoleum Mirror Chrome today. I'll wax it tomorrow, and let you know how it comes out. I waxed one side of the bait this morning, so I could compare it to the unwaxed side, and I can't tell the difference. I'm going back out to the garage now to wax the other side, and the bottom. Can I paint/topcoat directly over the wax, or do I need some kind of a binder coat?
JD_mudbug
In the comments to one of Engineered Angler’s videos, he says: "The acrylic in the floor wax is super hard and most paints stick to it really well." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZSHv0qKk88&list=PLEVBv_zywucTYrW8i-BqXBWZMdqoc6PnJ&index=17 I do believe I saw where he said to let the chrome dry overnight before dipping in the wax. I have seen him use transparent paint, UV clear resin, and tinted UV resin right on the wax after it cured for a couple of hours. Thanks for keeping us updated. I have been checking to see if I can still find the Pledge Floor Care Multi-Surface Finish in stores. I swear I saw some on a store shelf somewhere recently. It has been discontinued. There is a clear shot of the old product label at 4:56 in the following video if anyone is trying to still find it in stores. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-JfyKYWYGg&t=295s
ravenlures
JD I was just wondering if using KBS for final top coat would work. In the video he uses UV clear. I am going to try it and contact Engineered Angler’s for advice, or if someone has tried KBS to see how it works. Wayne
JD_mudbug
I don't think the topcoat will matter as long as the wax mid coat is used. As Anglingarcher said, the key is using a wax that does not have cleaners in it. KBS was asked about by someone in the comments. He said " The best results are from using the floor wax but...it still becomes slightly dull. To answer your question, yes you can coat it with KBS over the floor wax."

1vw
This stuff is the exact same as the original Pledge Floor Care Multi-Surface; same ingredients, same SCJ formula 35*3597. Just rebranded, I've been using it since the other stuff went off the shelves and it works exactly the same...
